A buddy purchased a Colt/Umarex AR15 in .22 lr and it did not perform well at all and so he purchased the S&W version and it ran great, so I had to have one.

I purchased it along with 600 rounds of Remington Shurshot 36 gr. high velocity ammo. I removed the aluminum "iron" sights and replaced them with Magpul BUIS sights that are virtually all plastic (like the M&P 15-22). The Magpul sights just seemed a better match for the little rifle.

Went to the range and after the first partial mag of ammo, had continuous problems with the Rem ammo I purchased and two other brands I brought with me. I had failures to feed and stovepipes every 2-5 rounds. I figured I had the wrong ammo for what the gun liked. So picked up two addition types of different brands, weights, velocities, and still had the same problems. CRAP!

Before breaking the rifle over a tree stump out of frustration, I thought I would see how loading one round in the magazine would do. The nice thing about the M&P 15-22 is that it DOES lock back on empty...and it did after I fired the one shot. Much to my surprise, the shell had not ejected. It was still firmly held in the extractor. So I repeated the test and got the same result two more times. While hand cycling didn't reproduce the problem, I guessed that the spent cases were being pulled back past the ejector. So I tweaked the ejector inward a tad bit and loaded a magazine with 5 rounds. All 5 fired without a single problem. So I tried different brands, weights, velocities of ammo and they all worked very well!! I was hugely pleased and got the gun sighted in at about 20 yards.

That isn't to say that I did not have problems after tweaking the ejector. I had two rounds that did not perform properly, both of the Rem Shurshot stuff mentioned above ($11 for 300 rounds at Academy, so fairly inexpensive). One round didn't feed. Okay, that happens sometimes. Then, I had a round with a case failure and near total separation of the base from the rest of the case. The firing pin struck the case and then the case failed about 90% around to the opposition side where it remained attached directly opposite of the firing pin strike. It appears that virtually all of the case remained attached. The shot resulted in the slug going down range and debris ejecting from the ejection port and also out of the left side of the gun, but I have no idea where it came out, but what came out on the left side was minimal compared to what came out the ejection port. Both hands and my face where sprayed with hot gasses, but with no resulting burns or shrapnel. It was just a small, but rather exciting event.

No harm was done to the gun. The barrel was clear. So I put another 100 rounds down range without any problems (using Federal ammo instead) and packed up for the day. I have shot the gun in two additional sessions and it has worked great.

More and more I hear how dangerous Remington ammo and arms are becoming... I want one but im not sure I could justify buying it when I have a perfectly running .22 and no AR to practice for... how close are they in operation?

The M&P 15-22 is very close in operation to a real AR15. It is about 98% correct. Missing from correct operation is a dust cover on the ejection port and of course the bolt/carrier/recoil spring system is different to accomodate the .22 lr rimfire. Otherwise, the bolt release, safety, trigger system all work like normal, down to locking back on empty even. The upper is more akin to a Colt Monolithic with a quad rail setup and massive long rail than to a regular M4, but that just allows for more options. The collapsing stock works fine.

Looking at the trigger and safety system, it would appear that you could replace all the trigger parts with other standard AR15 trigger parts. The safety could be replaced with an ambi safety or other aftermarket part.

There is no flash hider on the M&P, nor does it need one functionally. Flash isn't an issue.

I have heard of a few extractor problems but it is rare. As far as ammunition I would not recommend Remington 22's for this gun. I at first bought two box's of the 500 plus Remingtons. I had a total of 100 FTF. They all had a very good strike on the case but they just failed to ignite.

So IMHO DON"T FEED THE S&W ANY REMINGTONS.

They are the only bullets that have given such a problem.

I may be one of the lucky few but the S&W has run like a charm. Other than the Remington FTF 22's it has operated great. It is a very accurate gun and a lot of fun to shoot. For the record it likes Winchester, Federal and CCI.

I am now over 5,000 rounds through this rifle, I'm starting to think it was a mistake to buy..............I just can't put it down.

If you are looking for something different give this gun a try. Just like the Glock did the plastic S&W is growing on me. Maybe they knew what they were doing when they choose this over metal.

Hey Double Naught Spy, I just bought a 15-22 and im having the same ejecting issues. Could you please describe in a little more detail what you did to fix the issue. I've never had a firearm that I've messed with so I just dont want to break anything.

More on ejector tweaking (http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-long-guns/103187-m-p-15-22-repair-thread-fte.html) here, however if in doubt give S&W a call and they will make it right. :)

So, the Colt/Walther isn't the only one of the AR15 .22 replicas having issues. No, I believe that ALL .22 firearms need to be broken in. Funny how some have problems and some don't. My Colt needed 500 rounds to finally run flawlessley. I second the DO NOT USE REMINGTON AMMO in these replicas.

My Colt/Umarex/Walther what ever you want to call it, ran fine through a 1000 round torture test w/ few problems (ammo Federal blue box stuff). The problems I encountered were typical w/ any (new) 22LR rifle. I have come to the conclusion that the Colt is overpriced.

EAJ702, that is a good link and pretty much exactly what I did to get mine running.

The only problem now is that the extractor has fallen out. So I will be calling S&W. The whole pinned assembly came out and the parts are gone. I went through about 10 mags with only one or two glitches (REM ammo, of course) and kaput again. Funny thing, it runs well without the extractor, unless you have a misfire/dud.

So far between mine, Steely's, two guys on Youtube, and the guy on S&W forum (EAJ's link), all have been fixed the same way for the failure to eject problem.

My M&P 15-22 is still running well, but I stay away from the Remington Gold
Box ammo. It was the only rimfire ammo that I tested with the M&P that fed & performed poorly. Earlier this year I blew the extractor out of a Browning Buck Mark pistol using Remington GB. Needless to say, it’s on my do NOT purchase list. Good luck with your M&P 15-22. :)
