What is the effective range for Marlin Guide Gun with an 18.5" barrel in 45 70? I know it depends on the load and size of the slug but I'm just wondering the general range for the rifle.
Thanks,
Noah

The 45-70 is nicknamed the 100yd sledgehammer. The tables show that performance between a 300gr and a 405gr varies greatly until about 150yd then gravity begins to drag on them equally. I know folks shoot further with a 26" to 32" barrel like a Marlin Cowboy or a Handi Buffalo Carbine.

I can hit with my GG reliably out to ~150 yards. That's my limit with the peep sights. I took a mule deer at 80 yards.

I used to shoot bowling pins at 350 yd with my 1895SS. The gun will shoot accurately farther than I can see.

Direct or indirect fire? I seem to recall something about the army doing penatration tests at 500 yards on pine boards to see how well it stood up against the .50 Sharps. The 45/70 held out suprisingly well.
