I want to get something for less than $500.

I'd like to pick one up so I can have something to shoot while the ammo shortage is around. Additionally, it'll be good to have something to introduce others to shooting with a gun that has lower recoil than my other pistols.

Just looking for suggestions.

You should go to a store and handle as many as you can befor you buy one, Id look at Browning, Beretta, Ruger and S&W, their all make a good rimfire.
I have a Beretta NEOs, I really like it alot, at first I didnt like the way it looked but now I do.
Its accurate, reliable, very easy to take apart, magazines are cheap and it eats anything!

If you are going to be using it for any kind of real target practice or hunting go with a browning buckmark or a ruger. If its mostly for fun, definetly get a p22. Its gotta be one of my favorite guns to shoot.

Mostly going to be for fun.

I've handled most of the .22's that I think are out there. I'd love to get some feedback on guns that are held in high regard in your respective opinions.

then p22 all the way. Feels good, shoots decent. definetly feels alot more like your shooting a regular handgun than the buckmark or the ruger. I was surprised when I thought mine jammed on me for the first time when I was out shooting, on the next shot it did the same thing, then I realized I still had the takedown lever pulled down:o I have never shot a mosquito but they are supposed to be the same class of gun

Ruger Mk Series (Mk I, II, III).

Inexpensive, reliable, accurate.

The Rugers of course..I will also suggest the P22 or Sig mosquito, both operate similar to their full size counterparts.

Make mine a Ruger MKIII. That was the last one I bought and have been well satisfied.

Where I have a Ruger Mk II with about 8000 rounds through it, I've also had a few issues with it as well. It's reasonably accurate and fun to shoot but I've had 2 extractor claws fly out of it to parts unknown, a broken firing pin and 4 broken bolt stop pins during those 8000 rounds. If I were to get another 22 pistol (and I'm thinking about it) I'd get a Ruger Super Single Six with the interchangeable cylinders. That way I could shoot any 22 from short to mag in one gun.

Browning Buck Mark Hunter with high-viz front sight, heavy barrel. I have it on on order after I mulled around with my choice between this and the S&W 22A.

Ruger MK series are very nice; my uncle used to compete with one, outfitted with a red dot sight. Scary accurate.... Probably your best bet at your price point.

I've personally really enjoyed a friend's Buckmark.

Based on my own preferences, I'd have recommended a S&W Model 18, but that's a revolver, and odds are would be slightly over your desired price range if you could find one. Or I'd have recommended a S&W Model 41, which I've shot in Navy competition, but used ones run about $800.

I have a Ruger 22/45 and MKII Competition Model. I like the MKII much better.

This is the second one I've own.

I narrowed my search down to a Browning Buckmark Camper or Ruger. I went with the Browning mainly because it is easier to tear down. I don't like the plastic sight ramp. Torque it too tight and it cracks (they replaced it for free), don't tighten enough and the screws back out and you will get FTF issues.

My buddy has a Ruger MK II. Both of us have had issues cycling the cheap bulk ammo.

I guess I'd still go with the Buckmark considering all the issues. I'm all thumbs and I appreciate the easy tear down of the Buckmark.

I would either go with the Ruger Mark III/22/45 or the Browning Buckmark. They are very high quality .22's and you will have far less feeding problems with either of these compared to the walther p22 or the sig mosquito. I did the same thing you are doing a few months ago and when i went to purchase the mosquito, i did a double take on it and while it felt comfortable it was cheaply made and instead i picked up the ruger

I had a Ruger 22/45 Target Model that I really loved; had to sell it to pay the electric bill. I'd get another one without a second thought.

I recently introduced two "new" female shooters to the range. This is what I started them shooting. Plus, I shoot it more now due to the ammo shortage.

There has never been nor will there ever be a better sub-$500.00 .22LR than the Ruger MKII.

IHMO, of course...YMMV...though you will be wrong...

One of the most fun 22's I've tried is the Walther P22. My friend bought one last year and we couldn't put the sucker down.

I personally have a CZ Kadet slide on my 75BD, and it has also been great, just kinda bulky and heavy for the younger/smaller stature set.

I had two different Ruger 22/45's and found them to be quite top heavy and off balance, especially the bull barrel 5.5" version I had. The 'regular' MkII all-steel versions mitigate that, but then you have the shallow grip angle that you may/may not like.

See my thread here (http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=359915), which I also referenced here (http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?p=3525268) earlier this evening on a similar thread. They may contain helpful answers to my very similar question.

Stick with the Rugers.
