Hello,

I'm thinking about buying a shotgun for both home defense and hunting. I like the ergonomics of the Mossberg 500 line. I'm considering the 54169 model:

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this gun, or any advice about buying a HD/hunting combo weapon?

Thanks!

Hey, I was literally just about to enquire about the exact same thing. I too was looking at this, although don't have much use for hunting, more just for clays and was wondering if the field barrel would be necessary for that or if you can still reasonably pop clays with just a security barrel. Interested to see the comments.

Buddy has one(pretty sure this it is exactly what you linked). Superb gun, he loves it.

Field barrel would be helpful for clays. People successfully shoot clays with coach guns, but the barrel does give a little advantage. There are weight systems that you can hang from the barrel that help you swing through clays also.

Many clay facilities require a longer barrel I hear...
The swingability of a security gun is nice for HD distance on a large target but the regulars on here that shoot clays (I don't) will suggest nothing under 24+ inches. I will say a 28 inch hits more clays in my hands than my 18 inch gun...
Hands down far easier for me... plus I think that mossberg field barrel is tapped for the accu-chokes.

I tried ordering this exact model from Dick's in mid April and it's still out of stock.

about how much does this combo sell for at a place like dicks? how much do you save over buying a spare barrel separately?

EDIT: here's some MSRP info, seems like a great deal compared to piecing it together.
Model Desc MSRP
54169 combo 18.5" and 28" $391

50120 28" $354
90015 18.5" barrel $ 81.58
Total $435.58 (no pistol grip)

50577 18.5" $409
90130 28" barrel $163.17
Total $572.17

Dick's locally has the 54169 field/security combo for $269. Only problem is it's been out of stock and no telling when they'll get more.

And don't go by the MRSP, that is much higher than market price. Although I did see that if you try to special order from Walmart, they do charge MRSP, which is too much.

But Walmart does carry the field model 50120 28" for $207 and I've seen the 18.5' barrel's for $70-80 which would make piecing it together that way, with tax, a little under $300. I think that's what I'm going to end up doing.

I have the synthetic stock version in 20 gauge. I really only wanted the long barrel for clays, but it came with the short barrel too. it was $219 at big 5.
