I own a Maverick. It is a great shotgun for the $$$$. There are MANY MANY threads on this issue.

I don't use shotgun safeties. So, I prefer the 88's location to the Mossberg 500's where it's in the way.

Ain't that the truth...

Picked one up last year for $199. It lives under my bed and works like a charm. I have owned about 4 of these over the years. They are a great buy and very reliable.

Make sure you know how to hold it and shoot it properly if you use the pistol grip.
I shot some 00 buck and a few slugs through mine when I first got it, with the pistol grip attached. Mr. Macho at the range.
This is 2 years later and my wrist and thumb are still sore if I hold them a certain way.
The 88 is a good value for the money however. Mine now lives in the bedroom, about 2 feet away from the bed.
I figure if I have to use it in the middle of the night, recoil will be the least of my problems.

I picked up a mossberg 500 from walmart for 217$ and 80$ for a new 18" barrel, you could probly sell the 28" rib barrel that comes with the one from walmart for 80-100$ if all goes as planned you will come out with a mossberg 500 and a 18" barrel for around 220$
If you really want a maverick cheapest I saw one was at a gunshow for 229$
