Third generation Smiths are equal to other first class pistols. A real value.

+1...

S&W Third gen, alloy-little lighter than the 5906...as long as it's not been abused, it would be a worthy addition to most any collection of pistols :)

The 5904 was my issued duty gun for a few years. We had about 2100 of them issued out at any given time. Pretty much trouble free, more than accurate enough, and durable. One of our range officers tried to wear out a 5904 by shooting nothing but our duty ammo, W-W 115 +P+. He changed the barrel at 50,000 rds because the rifling was getting pretty well shot out. When he retired he had documented over 80,000 rds of +P+ thru the same gun. He bought the gun when he retired and continued shooting it. The last time I saw him he was still shooting it and had at least 100,000 rds thru it.
If yours will last 100,000 rds, or even 1/2 of that, then it's done you well. Just figure the cost of 50,000 rds of +P+. When that ammo was cheaper that would cost $25,000. It's nice when someone else pays for your ammo.

As others have already said, they are good guns. The great thing about third gen S&W autos is that you can often find them in excellent condition for a very reasonable price. Mags seem to be pretty plentiful as well. I have never had any problems finding them available for sale.
