Want to buy a used Colt 1911 What to look for

I want to buy an older Colt 1911 because the finishes on them are just beautiful. I would like to ask all of you what should I look for when inspecting them? Most likely a series 70.

I don't want to get someone dinner table screw up that has now traded it in because it doesn"t work right anymore.

Any help would be nice.
