I tracked the prices of Sig 228's for a couple of years and finally found one I liked on Gunbroker about eight months ago. At that time they were selling for the mid-$400 to low $500 range. In the past few months the prices on the 228's and most other guns has gone through the roof. Now the used 228's on Gunbroker are in the $700-800 range, clearly too high. Auctionarms often has some for sale but none presently. It may be about the same price to pick up a factory refurbished (CPO) 228 or 229/9mm. The 229/9mm is essentially the same as the 228 except the slide is made by a different manufacturing process. A couple of other places to look are www.ordnanceoutsellers.com or www.summitgunbroker.com for either new or used/CPO pistols. Both have good prices and service and usually respond quickly to emails. If you are willing to wait the prices will come down again once the hysteria is over, but it may take six months or more.

One other thing to consider is how the 228 fits your sister's hands. Mine is pretty fat in the grip, whether I use the factory grips or Hogue rubber grips (and I have pretty big hands- size 8 gloves). If possible let your sister handle one at a gunshop. The Sig 239 may fit her better- its a smaller size, single stack and holds 8 rounds of 9mm. It is accurate, light, small and reliable. I carry the 239 more than the 228 due to its better size. Good luck in your quest.

best wishes- oldandslow

Look on Gunbroker, Guns America, Auction arms and here in the forum. They pop up now and then....

Also if you do not mind a rail, personally they make me want to puke on a Sig :barf: , you can always get in line a pickup one of the new P228R that are coming into the country.

Kitery Trading Post, in Kittery Maine (KTP.com) usually has a good selection of factoryrefurbished Sigs. They are only a few miles away from the Sig factory in Exeter N.H

I picked one of them up today from a dealer in Phoenix. Holding my P228 and my P228R next to each other, I'd say that the slide machining of the P228 is better polished, but other than that, they are equal. And the rail seems much less obtrusive that the one on the P226R. I haven't measured them up, but it just looks more compact. All in all, I'm happy with it. Thanks for letting me know about them, this was the first mention of a P228R I had seen. :D

I got a 228 with about 55-65% finish left on it on GB a few months ago for about 325 shipped. Excellent mechanically. Sheer luck, right place/time sort of thing. The guy had replace the grips and screw plus it had a Mec-Gar mag. After dabbing it severely with two touchup pens, it looks pretty good.

The SIG is a true piece of egineering beauty. My 226 has never flinched in all the abuse it has encountered. The 22 line is a work horse. It doesn't matter if you buy it used, or new they work and don't stop working. Best handgun in the world......jmo
