long action Tika in 223... the Tikas are all long bolt guns, even if chambered for short action cartridges...

it looks like the box for the magazine is long on the 223 as well ( I haven't seen an actual magazine yet )

I load a lot of 223, but with the bullet seated out longer than spec for my Contender... I should be able to tweak the magazine ( if it even needs tweaking ), to accept my longer 223 cartridges through the long action Tika... & set up the gun to shoot the same cartridges I'm loading for my Contender...

the only "problem" I see, might be throating the chamber a little deeper, & maybe a tighter crimp to cycle my "longies" through the action???

anyone ever try anything like this ??? thoughts ???

BTW... I'd think this would work for any of the short action cartridges, shooting long slippery bullets, similar to my setting up an '06 action to shoot 6.5 X 284 ???

You can tweak the magazine, but if you cut the mag block out too much, the bolt won't go back far enough to pick up the cartridge. You might be able to replace the bolt-stop if you need the bolt to move further rearward.

If you put the mag in the rifle and pull the bolt back to the bolt-stop, you'll be able to see how much of the mag block you can remove and have the bolt still pick up a cartridge.

MagnumWheelMan:

Thanks for giving me an excuse to uncase my Tikka T3 Hunter and take some pics, though it shows me she needs some dusting. Its a 3-06, not a 223, but I hope this helps you out. I took three pics, two with the mag in, and one from underneath without the mag to show the feed ramp from below.
Hope this helps! Good luck! If you need anything more specific, I can try to take some more. Let me know!

I've got a 223 T3 Lite with both the 4 shot and 5 shot mags.

Am at work now, but will take pics when I get home and upload them for you. (unless sholling beats me to it)

If you put a cartridge in the magazine you'll have a better idea of how far the mag block can be ground out.

Here you go. Sorry for the blue tinge to everything, that camera seems to do that in bad light. Also put a ruler next to it to give rough ideas on dimensions, though the flash washed it out on several of the pics.

Round is 55g Federal Powershock SoftPoint

Snap cap used to show clearance from bolt, same dimensions as the 55g round (maybe 1mm longer at the tip)

thanks for the pics... that gives me a better idea as to what mods would be needed to fit the much longer single shot cartridges... I think it would be really neat to be able to get both a bolt action & my single shot to shoot pretty good with the same loads... a tweak of the throats or chambers, & a bit in the reciepes, & maybe I'll get lucky ???
