I am looking to get either the 45 or the 40 from Sig. Originally I was going to go for the 45 because of the better stopping power and the I guess, slower recoil (less snappy). The problem I have is that the 40 with it's staggered loads has a wider mag and thus a wider grip. It fits PERFECTLY in my hand. What do I think about here? Do I consider a caliber that I'm not necessarily against for the actual feel of it in my hand?

Pic the one that fits your hand the best and fire away. :)

For me? 229; the 220 is sweet, but way big.
Either way, you're getting a Sig, so no worries about quality and reliability. :D

I have both, the P229 fills my hand better. The P226 fits even better. The P220 is wider front to back, and not as hand filling.

All three are basically the same size, but the 226 and 229 can be dual caliber guns in .40/357SIG with an additional drop in barrel. You also get an additional 4 rounds in the gun.

They all are easy to shoot well with, but I prefer the 357SIG myself, followed by the .40, mostly due to mag capacity, and I think the 357SIG is the hottest of the bunch.

The P220 fits my hand better. But the P229 in .40 S&W is easily converted to .357 Sig, both pretty good rounds.

Have you ever shot a .40S&W?

Rent one or make friends with someone that has one and put a few through it.

If you dont like it, try something else.

Also, a .40 P229 will give you a .357sig with only the cost of the barrel (no spring or mag change). You can also go 9mm from the 40 set up with almost no changing of parts.

Makes it a very useful toy and off sets the cost a lot when you have 3 guns for ~$450 each

Whatever you get put a set of Hogue rubber grips on the gun and it will feel like a million dollars when you shoot.

My older 220 is too thin for my hand size, even with the Hogue grip. My friend's 229 fits much better.

But the 220 is a keeper.

The P229 has a very comfortable and well-designed grip, at least for my hand. Although the P220 is not bad - but it feels narrower and longer front to back.

I prefer the 220 ("Carry" Model) not so much because of the bigger caliber but because the single-stack grip feels right in the hand and I can carry it comfortably in an iwb holster. It's my carry piece of choice after experimenting with many other handguns.

This finding a pistol that fits the hand as well as the waist is a purely subjective endeavor and there's no shortcut to trying different ones for yourself.
