People will always ask for the best rifle out there, and you get suggestions of everyone's favorite brand. A lot of the time their opinion is based on something like they had the one and it shot.

Firearm ballistics are not a top security secret, "everyone" knows what it will take to make a 1/4" shooter.

So presumably all the manufacturers out there know what to do to make an accurate rifle, weather or not they adhere to what they know is something else.

Most use different designs and mechanics, but what is it that really separates the performance and components of the different designs and mechanics?

For example the lock nut to screw on a Savage barrel. I imagine that saves a lot of time, money, and work to fix it into place right, and seems to produce a rifle as accurate as any other design.

or

Different brands have different locking systems on the bolts, is there any advantage of the mechanics of one design over another?

For the sake of discussion lets keep it in the realm of brand name off the shelf rifles, in a "sniper" configuration. Everyone knows a custom rifle from a smaller shop will be the best made.

The "sniper" or evil black model seems common to at least one model per brand, just to help narrow the scope here, and seem more fixed around accuracy and performance than a standard model.

I think a seasoned handloader has a huge advantage over the shelf ammo buyer. So much so that the rifle make becomes a distant second consideration.
