Sending a shotgun via mail

Is it possible and lawful to send a shotgun brother to brother thru
the postal service? Say via USPS or UPS. No money exchanged
cause its within family.

If it is crossing State lines..NO..Must go to a dealer in that state to background check and deliver.

It will cross states, and I would hate to see it taken due to ignorance.
I have a FFL dealer somewhat close and will have it shipped to him.

It is my understanding that a non FFL dealer can ship via USPS/UPS
across states if a shotgun is broken down in its parts and sent to a FFL
certified dealer. Correct me if Im wrong.

It doesn't have to be broken down to ship the the FFL. The only benefit to breaking it down is a smaller box.

You can break it down to parts and ship everything except the reciever to your brother. The reciever is considered the "firearm", so it has to go to the FFL.

Now, on the topic of shipping firearms, you can ship it to yourself at his address for the purpose of hunting and competetive shooting. But YOU have to be tpresent to sign/accept the package, and YOU have to open the package. THen you would have to sell the firearm to your brother in the presence of an FFL holder. Sounds like a good excuse to make a visit to your brother.

I would love to go see my brother in ND, but cost is an issue. Thanks for the info and I now plan to have it sent to my FFL buddy to make it legal. Happy Holidays to all.
