View Full Version : Best Magazines for an ak-47?

Are the plastic magazines such as tapco's or promag's acceptable to use in an AK-47 type rifle?

I am mainly concerned about reliability.

They are always less than $20.00 around here and I was hoping they were as good as the old metal magazines.

I really like the Bulgarian Circle 10 waffle pattern polymer mags (http://www.jgsales.com/product_info.php/magazines-for-rifles/ak,-rpk-sks-mags/p/ak-47-bulgarian-arsenal-waffle-pattern-30-round-mags-/cPath/332_190_191/products_id/1586) from JG sales.

These have steel in the lips and lugs for added strength.

The best magazines that I've used with my AK were the Chinese ones and they are rarely seen anymore. I've never used the polymer ones but I hear a lot of guys like them.

Agree with the Bulgarian polymer mags. They are some of the best I've used. Any of the Com-Block steel have also all run good for me.

I would grab up the imported stuff while you can.

I am partial to the Hungarian 20rd tanker mags myself.

Bullockcm -I must agree. I left out the Hungarian 20's. They are some of my favorite as well. Fit very well on the gun rack, and have never had a failure of any kind with mine.

Good point! All of my steel mags are Chinese :)

I have a few Bulgarian plastic mags and they are tops.
Heard bad things about Promags. (feed issues, melting)

For you guys who compete in 3-gun matches or other sports with your Kalashnikov variant, military surplus mags are the absolute best (any country). This includes the Bulgarian polymer waffle mags.

Stay away from US made junk ( ProMag ) for reliability ( however, they are good for immediate action drills ).

US made Master Molder (formerly Thermold) and Surefire polymer mags haven't been out long enough for any meaningful feedback on reliability (they're not ProMags).

If you have the use of an AK-47, I'm sure all the mags you'll need will be provided for you.

Agreed, much easier to shoot prone and better overall than a 30 rounder.

I have various steel surplus mags, E. German and others, they all seem good.

Didn't know Pro Mag made mags for AK's, but the news doesn't thrill me, because the pistol mags I got from them were the worst I've ever bought.

Also enjoy the Hungarian 'tanker' mags. Still holds 20 rounds but less awkward. Extremely sturdy.

Personally, I don't use the 30 or 40 round mags.
I use 10 and 20 rounders, the 20 round Hungarian "tanker" mags are my favorite, I've used them in every AK I've owned (...from my nice Bulgarian, to my cheap WASR, and even in my converted Saiga) and they work great.

If it's metal and was made by commies, it's good. Never tried ProMag, but I would expect the worst, Promag stinks. Bulgarian plastic seems to be good also, but unless you have to carry them far and frequently, I would recommend the traditional metal mags, they work and they are dirt cheap.

I'm partial to the 20 round tanker mags, myself. I've got three and like them all.

Bulgarian waffle mags (the real deal! Learn how to spot knockoffs),and ComBloc steel. Avoid ProMag at all costs, they are not worth the headache and how they stay in business is beyond me.

The bulgarian waffle and "bullet" polymers are the best I have used. That would include romanian and polish. The bullet style are cheaper but don't look as cool. I like the 30 and even 40 round mags just for the capacity. AKs can be finicky about steel mags compared to polymer

are made for commercial use in Bulgaria. They are not designed for military use and have no metal in them (reinforcements or otw).

One gets what one pays for (sometimes many times over).

I wonder the same thing about one of the local pizza places. Nobody admits to eating there, their stuff is nasty and overpriced.

"have no metal in them"

The one "bullet magazine" i have is at home so I can't re-check it, but I'm pretty sure it has metal in the feed lips.

I prefer the Yugos for the bolt hold-open feature.

I've had good luck with Tapco, East German and the Hungarian tanker mags. I prefer the 20 rounds though, in my AK and AR. I keep the 30 rounders for "just in case" though.

Sorry can't help myself....:D I took two pro-mag ak mags and plastic welded them together... So I have a couple of 60s now. Talk about eatting up ammo fast  Yeah they feed just fine.... And I'm going to make more (way more).

I tried doing them two different ways... The one on the right in the way I'm going to make the rest of mine. And I'm not done with them, they need some paint to look right

I just use the commie metal ones that I often find for 20 bucks a pop in most gun stores. I have four 30 rounders, and one 40 round magazine for my WASR10. None of them have given me any problems.
