Silly hypothetical alert:

If you were to limit yourself to acquiring one, and only one, semiautomatic handgun from each manufacturer, which guns would they be?

Please list manufacturer, model, and caliber.

I'm curious to know people's opinions on what gun best represents or defines a particular manufacturer.

I'll play along.

Glock: 17
Sig: 226 in 9x19
HK: USP in 9x19
CZ: 75B in 9x19
Colt: 1911 in 45 ACP without firing pin safety.
Beretta: 92FS in 9x19

Actually my current collection reads a lot like one of these lists:

Beretta PX4 Storm 9mm
CZ 75B .40S&W
Dan Wesson CBOB .45ACP
Glock 26 9mm
Kahr CW40 .40S&W
SIG P229 .40S&W
Smith & Wesson 617-1 (6 shot) .22LR - a revolver I know, but it's what I've got.

If I was just trying to collect "quintessential" models that really represented their manufacturers I'd probably opt for a list like this:

Beretta 92FS 9mm
Browning Hi-Power 9mm (obviously)
Colt Series 70 1911 .45 as close to mil-spec as possible
CZ 75B 9mm
FN FiveseveN 5.7x28
Glock 19 9mm (preferably 2nd gen, as the 3rd gen finger grooves don't work for me on this model)
H&K USP45 .45 (P7 is a close second, but it represents the H&K of yesteryear, rather than today)
Kahr K9 9mm
Kel-Tec P32 .32 (so I could dump it in the trash)
Kimber Eclipse Target II .45
Magnum Research Desert Eagle .50AE
North American Arms Guardian .380
Rorhbaugh R9 9mm
Ruger P89 9mm
SIG P229 9mm
S&W 1006 10mm
Springfield 1911A1 6" Longslide .45
Steyr M9A1 9mm
Taurus 24/7 Pro 9mm (And if it didn't work spot-on right out of the box I'd throw it in with the Kel-tec)
Walther P99 9mm (close second would be a PPK/S, for the same reason as H&K P7)

I would begin by excluding Glock.

According to the silly hypothetical, you need to acquire 1 glock too, I'll take the ugly $75 piece of Tupperware off your hands though, that way I could have 2:D

But seriously Air,Land&Sea, thanks for your thought provoking response. It added so much to the conversation;)

Spot on, Recon7, I'd still like to know what people consider to be Glock's representative or defining handgun, despite whether or not you like 'em

I only have one Glock. A G17, so I guess I already answered the question to myself. The G19 left my pinky right across the bottom ridge, so it was a no go. Here is something, If I had 1 of every other brand, I would have several great full size guns, so may then opt for a baby Glock.

If I had to get 1 gun from each company I would go with these. Springfield, Colt, Smith & Wesson, Taurus, Kimber and probably a few more I can't think of. They would all be .45 1911's. Having not only the advantage of all shooting the same caliber, I could also mix and match parts and mags if needed.

Interesting to think about. If I could only have 1 gun from a specific manufacturer and only 5 guns total, this is what I'd choose -- (variety and capturing the essence of classic and unique design was what drove my choices):

Colt: Single Action Army .357 Mag/.38 Special
I know, 1911 fans are groaning but I gotta have a revolver and it's gotta be an SAA and nothing quite compares to a Colt. History buffs may cringe, but I'm going with the more inexpensive and versatile chambering.
Browning: Hi-Power 9 MM
Similar to 1911 style/design and yet unique and deserving in it's own right. An excellent representative of 100 years of full-size metal semi-auto design.
Walther: PPK .380 ACP
Representing the elegance, coolness, and practicality of conceal carry.
Beretta: 87 .22 LR
Gotta have a gun I can afford to shoot. I can do that with the 87 and enjoy the design, beauty, and historical similarities of many quality Beretta handguns manufactured over the years.
FN: Five-seveN 5.7x28 MM
Satiates the craving for a modern, polymer pistol that is lightweight, hi-capacity (20 round mags) and thoroughly fun to shoot.
