I said I would only consider an AR platform (in .223 or .308) if the gas system was a piston design so that the gun wouldn't poop where it eats.

Now there seem to be several companies offering this set up.

Any opinions about which companies to take seriously (and who is just over priced, quality wise) since these are not low dollar purchases?

if i were in the market for one, it would be an lwrc.

IMO, the HK's are over priced.

i havent read anything bad about any of the brands. though i havent really been following it.

I am shopping for an AR-15 also. I am considering a Fulton Armory FAR-15.
I can't make my mind up yet whether to get a DCM/CMP National Match Rifle or the 5.56/.223 Universal Precision Rifle (UPR). They have quite a few options to be considered for the UPR.
I do not know a lot about the AR platform, but it intrigues me.
I own a M1 Garand that i had rebuilt years ago at Fulton and I was very impressed with their workmanship and customer service.

I don't pretend to know much about AR's, but just browsing in a gun mag yesterday I happened to see a gas piston conversion for the AR system. Don't know much more than that, looked slick though.

Solves both problems. It operates with a gas piston and it gets rid of the ground squirrel caliber. :D
