After seeing all the pictures of the Sig GSRs, I got an itch for another 1911. Primarily for range fun and maybe HD. Which would you choose and why.
Thanks

I went with the SIG because it was the better deal at the time. More features for the money. Either would serve you well.

I wouldn't chose a 1911 with a proprietary, external extractor.

Of the two we decided to go with the SIGs as a regular stock item to complement our Colts. They just seem to be better made.

No problems at all with my S&W 1911. I love it and would never want to sell it.

If it's for regular carry, I'd go for the S&W 1911PD, commander size: reduced weight. That said, I had my eye on a GSR for a while, too. Enjoy! Can't go wrong, either way. :D

Handled both at Shot, bought the SIG.

Either can be good guns.

All this talk and bashing of 1911's with the external extractor cracks me up. Have there been any widespread problems with them? NO. Do they function like they are supposed to? YES. Are the guns equipped with them reliable? YES.

I just don't see this as the big problem/issue some make it out to be. I love Colts, S&W's, Springers, RIA's, etc. Doesn't matter to me what type of extractor it has.

Right now my S&W is my favorite.

I opted for both. I bought the Sig first and now have a Smith on layaway as the right used gun presented itself. I don't see the external extractor on the Smith to be an issue. For other 1911 shooters it's a deal breaker. If I had to chose between the two I really don't yet have enough info to make the choice. I think it would be a tough choice and my guess would be that I won't have a strong preference for one gun or the other.

I would say the Kimber 1911's had the biggest problem with their EE. They have since switched back to a standard, internal extractor.

When I was having problems with mine, they put a new slide on with the standard, internal extractor.

S&W have, dare I say, have perfected the EE. I love mine. So far, it's reliability has been great.

Some companies use the EE and they run just fine. Some goof it up, realize it, and go back to the standard setup.

Maybe it's just me, but I believe that the short external extractors (like the ill fated Kimbers) have the problems and the longer ones such as the ones on the Smiths function just fine.

The Sig is a nice gun (seems they've worked the bugs out), but I'd lean S&W because the slide profile would fit the same holsters as other 1911s. While Sig holsters can be had without too much hassle, 1911 holsters themselves are very easy to come by and are generally interchangeable (only other exception would be a Springfield 1911 with the chunkier dust cover, but holsters for those fit "regular" 1911s just fine).

I've shot both and consider their quality a toss up. How much can you improve on 10 out of 10? Given the choice I'd probably pick the Smith.

Don't all Sigs have external extractors? I'm willing to bet they know how to do it and do it right.

Yes, they do, there are no problems at all with it that I know of.

Consider the BHP all its production life it has had an external extractor, ever hear of problems with it?

Some 'purist' along the way saw the external extractor on the 1911 and didn't like it. It works just fine I've had no problems with mine.

I've got 2,500 + malfunction free rounds through this one. SIG builds a very nice 1911.

p.s. S&W makes a nice 1911 as well.

Both are great 1911's and the external extractors aren't an issue. I opted for the SIG as the S&W 1911 had the machined "step" in the breech face that marked the brass up.

The S&W was beautifully made otherwise. Couldn't go wrong with either really.

I looked at both of these, but decided that I wanted a more classic looking 1911. The external extractors just make the gun look less like a 1911 in my viewpoint.

I ended up going with a custom gun from one of the newer small custom shops: Fusion Firearms. Their guns start at $1195, and mine cost $1295. The company is owned by Bob Serva, who owned and ran Dan Wesson Firearms for several years, before he sold the company to CZ.

Dan Wesson 1911 are quite affordable, and a great value. You can get their full size Pointman stainless guns for just over $800 They are really fine guns, as you can see in these photos:

With guns from Fusion, you can have them custom built to your exact specs, with every option just the way you want. But the lead time for them is 3 1/2 months.

Here is a photo of my new Fusion Scout Elite XL:

I've watched Jack do trigger jobs on S&@'s. Not impressed by the quality of the internal parts.

Sig's I haven't shot, other then the 220,229, etc. Also, can't get the ones I want here, since I'm after a CCO sized gun.

I've been looking at the Dan Wesson Bobtail, but, can't get one around here that isn't marketed up to around 1200 dollars. Ordering from Buds, they come in under 900, and, at that price, appear to be a great deal, with quality parts already installed.

Since you want it for range and HD, and weight is not an issue, I'd be looking at a full sized gun, and in stainless steel. Something that can be put under the pillow, and not rust.

Detonics makes nice guns, if you can find them...
