so I have a 5'' colt 1991a1 bone stock and I was wanting to replace the spur hammer with a commander one like this

now I do like skeleton hammers and extended bevertail safeties on most guns but I'd prefer the go more subtle on this gun like this

I have a fullsize 1991 so aside from the slide length and the spur hammer they are identical

I guess I'll also probly need the grip safety also, although the first pic looks like a standard GS(maybe I'm wrong) so if I can avoid that, that'd be nice.

Either

www.midwayusa.com

www.brownells.com

will do.

Like Kreyzhorse said either Midway or Brownells. You don't really need the beaver tail unless you're getting hammer bite which with a proper grip most likely wont happen. Some people like the arched mainspring housing, some like the flat.

I've never gotten hammer bite but the spur does come back and dig into my hand a bit when I shoot, plus I prefer the look of the commander hammer

Sounds a lot like hammer bite to me! :D

well I've never gotten my hand pinched between the hammer and GS. I was under the impression that, that was what hammer bite actually was

You can buy original Colt or aftermarket "Commander" or "burr" hammers from Brownell's, Midway, and Gun Parts Corp.

Keep in mind, hammers MUST be fitted and checked by someone who knows their stuff.

Also, some grip safeties will interfere with the Commander type hammer and you may have to alter or replace the grip safety.

well I know people who can install it for me but I was planning on getting the Jerry Kuhnhausen books and his video. I'd like to be able to do it myself eventually

Be aware that a commander ring hammer will not clear the top of the grip safety on most 1911s at full cock without a clearance cut in the grip safety. It's not hard to do. Most 1911s are more comfortable to fire with a proper beavertail safety and it allows a higher grip on the gun. I really like the commander hammer on a 1911 too. The Kuhnhausen manual is a very worthwhile investment.

Berryhill Custom or EGW.

+1 on Berryhill Custom.

Great guy to deal with. A top shelf product at a reasonable price.

If you're replacing the hammer, you might as well replace the sear and disconnector while you're at it. Berryhill's Ultimate Ignition Set is at the top of my list of things to get. :)
