Generally they will be good out of a compact, or sub compact. If you have a 5 inch barrel, i'd go with 230 grain.

I've been reading about them, and I think I am probably going to get a couple
of boxes to try in my Springfield Micro-Compact. I carry Winchester SXTs in
it now, and they work fine, but I wouldn't mind the extra velocity of the
165 gr. Hydra-Shoks.
They sure are expensive, though, but what isn't, these days?
$3.15 for a gallon of gas? OUCH!!!

I shot one box, some years ago, and they produced a real fireball.

I tried a box a couple of years ago at an indoor range and decided against them because of their bright muzzle flash.

$3.15 is a bargain right now. The cheapest I've seen it is $3.27 and right across state lines in Ohio its going for $3.45!

The Hydra-Shok is an outdated round. From a 5" You're better off with Federal 230gr HSTs. From a shorty you're better off with either 230gr Ranger T, 230gr Federal LE Bonded, or Speer Gold Dot for short barrels. The Ranger-Ts and the Federal LE rounds are available over the Internet for about half the price of the outdated Hydra-Shok.

I'd go Speer Gold Dot JHP. You might want to research them a little bit.

The Hydra-Shok is an outdated round.

They may be an old design but they are still an extremely effective bullet. The 230 grain HydraShok has been the benchmark of .45 acp ammo for years. While its conventional design does not allow it to be as effective as a bonded bullet against barriers, it is still an excellent bullet for CCW.
