A K-22 / model 17 is chambered in 22LR. If it's a 38 special then it's a K-38 / model 14.
The serial number (K20XXX) dates it to 1948. For that time period the same serial number should also be on the underside of the barrel and back of the cylinder.

Side note: A K-22 / K-38 from early 1948 would likely have a tapered, thin barrel. Is there only 5 digits after the "K" in the SN or 6?

It is a 5 digit serial # K 20XXX

Hello

A friend of mine got a S&W from his father. His dad got it from a policeman in the 1960's and was reportedly "old" back then. I looked in the yoke and there is no model number stamped in it. I checked and the only things stamped are a Y and a 3 and a 2 with a circle around it. It has a pinned nonbull barrel. Sqaure butt grips. Marked .38 s&w special ctg. Honestly it looks like a model 10. Serial number is 4275xx Any guess to the year?
Thanks!

Sounds like your friend has a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 4th change, made between 1921 & 1927. This is the direct ancestor of the Model 10.

I have recently bought a Smith and Wesson 22 m.r.f. ctg revolver ,serial # 6k2XXX, model#48-2. Also has L or E 10 stamped above the model#, and also under the hand grips. The reason I say L or E is under the grips it looks like an E??. It was in a group of guns I just happened up on and bought. I am not a real gun guy just took a chance. I have a guy wanting to trade me a brand new in the box P345 ruger for it. Just don't want to give it away. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance Rob. If I have asked this in the wrong place please excuse.

Harley 58:
Your Model 48-2 K22 Masterpiece Magnum Rimfire was manufactured in 1974, based on the serial number. The problem is that it should be a 48-4 if manufactured that year.
The E10 and other numbers or letters are assembly numbers used to track parts in the factory and are irrelevant once the gun is assembled. Only the model number and serial number have any relevance.

In 2006 the Standard Catalog of S&W gave values of $450 ANIB, $375 Excellent, $300 Very Good, $250 Good, $185 Fair and $100 in Poor condition.

A quick check on Gunbroker.com & gunsamerica.com show P345s for $450 to $480 and Model 48s from $700 to $900 but there are no bids, so these prices are probably high. I would trade it if the Ruger is a gun you actually want, as it will save you transfer and shipping fees. If you are just trading for tradings sake I would keep the S&W as it is uncommon and no longer produced.

Just to add a little,
A 48-2 in the same serial range (6Kxxxx) sold on Gunbroker recently. Though not listed as such, apparently the -2's do exist that late.

Checking completed auctions the "sold" prices ranged from a low of $495 to over $800.

HARLEY58,
The model 48 (not beat up) is a collectable and worth more than the Ruger, hence, him offering you a new one in exchange. But, like Radagast said, go for the one you like best.

That's a tough one. SCSW lists the "UAM" prefix as 1997, and the "VHN" prefix as 1998, with no further information. I guess you could infer that your pistol dates from those years, but I think it would only be a guess.

I'm fortunate to have found this forum. I would like to know what kind of S&W revolver I have and what year if possible.
It has a four inch barrel, double action, fixed sights, swing out ejector cylinder, no safety that I can see.

Right side of barrel stamped Smith & Wesson Springfield Mass USA. Last pat'd year Sept. 14-09 there is one Maltese cross at the beginning and at the end of the stamping.

Left side of barrel starts with a engraving mark than 38 S&W special CTG and again the engraving mark.

I found the serial number after taking off the grips on the bottom of the frame the first three numbers are 227, a matching number was located on the underside of the barrel visible when you slide the cylinder away only there is a letter B about one 1/4 inch in front of the number.

After examining the frame where the nipples are to align the grips there is a letter E and above that is I believe a #8. Also this is a round butt five screw revolver.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you

I would like to add a bright (tru glo) front sight, It appearts that the front blade may be just forced, or friction fit. I shoot 148 HBWC and can only properly use them with a 38 spec. If I use this round in any of my 357's it tends to affect the fuction of the weapon after 30 or 40 rounds.

The front sight blades on later S&W's (like yours) are either pinned or forged as a one piece part of the barrel. If one piece a gunsmith would have to cut off the blade and mill a slot into the base and fit/pin a new blade in.

Christobal65: That's a .22 Ladysmith 1st Model, made from 1902 to 1906. It's built on the "M" frame, which is the smallest frame used for S&W Hand Ejectors. According to SCSW, the SN range was from 1 to 4575, so presumably that's how many were made. Prices range from a few hundred $ to a few thousand $, depending on condition.

My father has a K frame with a serial number of 1587xx.

I know it is a hand ejector, chambered in .38 S&W Special, with the fixed sights (blade front), center diamond grips with gold crests, S&W trade mark on the right side, with the S&W markings to include patents (last one= Sep 14. 09

It is in pretty good condition with solid bluing (mior "pitting"), some holster wear, a few very fine scratches, and clean bore.

Could you please help me with proper identification, date of production, and approximate value?

I'm also researching a few of his other weapons that he has from his elders. So far I've worked on his 1915 Winchester Model '94, a 1938 Hunter Arms "The Fulton" 16ga SxS, his 1950 Colt Detective Special .38. I'm working on this Smith and just out of curiosity also an Iver Johnson Arms and Cycle Works break action .32 hammerless 5 shot revolver.

Jake Chandler:
The grips are vulcanised (hard) rubber. They were the standard grip on your gun, as I mentioned over at THR. Your best bet would be to check with Numrich: http://www.e-gunparts.com/

Christobal65:
Depending on mechanical condition your gun would probably be considered good to very good condition. In 2006 the Standard Catalog of S&W gave a value of $450 to $600. Please note that these guns were chambered in .22 long, not .22 long rifle and are known to crack the forcing cone when shot with .22lr.
If you can't find .22 shorts or longs to shoot through it, it would be best not to shoot it at all.

TK14SS:
You have a .38 Military & Police Model of 1905 3rd Change manufactured between 1909 & 1915, serial number range was 146900 to 241703.
In 2006 the Standard Catalog of S&W gave values of $285 to $385 for very good to excellent condition.
Note that this gun was made before heat treating of cylinders and it would be prudent to only shoot it with standard velocity lead ammunition. It also lacks the modern hammer block safety so there is a very small risk that it could discharge if dropped on the hammer. Best to keep the hammer down on an empty chamber if it is kept loaded.

Sweet. I was born Dec1 of 85. So would this Stainless 1985 m60 be safe with the hottest +P .38special? Does it take standard J-frame grips? Are there any quirks about this era model?

I only payed 329 OTD but its a little rough. Looks like it was carried ALLOT but shot a little. Some new grips and the stainless will polish right up. Its still very tight. The cylinder face and cylinder rings aren't very stained and the rifling and forcing cone are still bright and sharp with no powder or jacket fouling.

Thanks

The first plus P rated Model 60 came out in 1990. Accepted internet wisdom (ie use at your own risk) is that limited use of Plus P in a early model won't harm the gun, regular use will accelerate wear. For the grips, jany round butt J frame grip will fit. If yours is a 60-1 with a three inch heavy barrel and square butt then you will need to look for square but grips.

I didn't see a -1 on the yoke. The bottom of the the grip frame is flat but with slightly rounded corners. A set of modern 2009 grips from my 642 and 360 airweights fit perfectly. What would that make it?

Do you think a steady diet of the FBI lead HPSWC would hurt?

I thought mine had the .38/magnum frame and cylinder length but i could be wrong.
The +P rated frame did not start until 1990 at 60-7. The "Magnum frame" did not start until 1996 at (60-9) when they started chambering for the 357.

adam731432: You have a round butt gun, and possibly you could harm the gun. Certainly regular use of plus P will wear the components and throw the timing out faster than standard pressure ammo. If you want to shoot plus P on a regular basis, buy a 60-7 or later gun. Yours is a 60 'no dash' and has not been reinforced for the heavier loads.

The serial number on the bottom is S 907833.
You have a 38 Military and Police Postwar.
The "S" serial prefixes ran from S811120 in 1945 to S999999 in 1948.

Because of the rust the value would be low. A quality, professional bluing job can run about $200 dollars but, while there are methods to remove the rust there could be pitting underneath that a polishing job will not remove.
I'd suggest taking it to a local gunsmith knowledgeable of refinishing to get an idea of other finish options you could try.

Your model 25-5 dates to 1979-1980, your model 66 most likely dates to 1975 (there are some gaps in the serial ranges given in the standard catalog of S&W for that year, your gun falls in one of those gaps).

I inherited a Smith and Wesson 38 Special from my step grandfather. I has some rough spots on it, but it doesn't look like rust. It does have a nice picture of a S and a W on top of each other in a circle. At the top of the circle it reads "trade" and at the bottom it reads "Mark". On one side of the barrell it reads 38 S.&W. Special CTG. On the other side of the barrell it is spelled out "Smith & Wesson". The serial number on the bottom of the handle is 4D79765 / I would appreciate it so much if someone could give me some insight on when this was made, view the pics and offer an estimate on about how much it is worth. Thanks in advance, I will be so thankful!

That's a very good question, Bill. The 60 was actually introduced in 1965, the 60-1 came along in '72, and the 60-2 was 1987. Both the -1 and the -2 were limited production special runs (171 and approx. 2500 pieces, each, respectively), so it appears that the "no dash" continued in production in parallel with the -1 and -2. The -3 came out in 1988, and I assume at that point all the 60s became 60-3.

There's no question that the "AND" prefix was used in 1986; the 3-character alpha prefix system for all S&W revolvers was initiated in 1980. As another check - look for a pinned barrel. That feature was dropped in 1982, so your revolver should not have one.

FlyFish

stoneyrok: You appear to have a Model 10, aka the .38 Military and Police. Based on the SN, the gun dates from 1979 and, because it has the bull barrel, it should be a Model 10-8 (the tapered barrel produced at the same time was the 10-7). If you swing the cylinder out and look at the area of the frame exposed thereby, you should see 10-8 stamped there, along with some other numbers that you can ignore.

There are a lot of Model 10s around, and due to the condition (that does look to me like rust on the cylinder), yours is probably worth no more than a couple hundred dollars.

If the M60 is a no dash, how could it have been made as late as 1986, though? The M60 was introduced in the 1970s.
To add to Flyfish's response, the 60-1 designated a 3" heavy barrel. 60-2 was a special run for the NYCPD. They were separate of the standard model 60. The standard 60 became the 60-3 in 1988 with the change to the new yoke retention system.
Other models of S&W also had different dash numbers running concurrently.

Glad to be a new member here. Have been looking for info on my S&W 29-2 serial #440***.
If it has an "N" prefix, it was built circa 1970-1972, most likely 1972 because it's near the end of the quoted N1 – N60,000 serial number range. The Model 29 experienced a huge surge in popularity in 1971 due to movie featuring a fictional San Francisco police detective played by Clint Eastwood. ("I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky?") ;)

If there's no "N" prefix, you're probably looking at an assembly number, and the number you want is on the butt. You may have to remove the grips to see it.

Atari,

I think its 1986/1987. The book isnt very clear to me on the serial# (lots of missing letter data). Interesting though as the detail info for the 686 itself says the -1 (dash one) started in 1986.

Can I ask you for help? Do you know how to reply with a quote? The option doesnt appear on your post for me to hit "quote" like I would expect. Is it because I dont have a long post history?

Any idea what the lettering color should be on the barrel and such? Does red seem like the right color from the factory? Were there different colors or all the same? No color would be correct. It was common, however for owners to use paint sticks to highlight the rollmarked lettering.

Some current production guns from S&W do come with highlighted lettering where the lettering is laser etched (such as the model 41, 329, etc).

From what I can tell, the only way to quote is by using the "quote" tool button while writing a message. Then paste the quoted text into the post. Not exactly straight forward.

Hello to all and Happy New Year,

First time post and new to the site. I just purchased a like new S & W Model 65-6, Serial number CEK2XXX. I read almost every post on this thread yesterday and know the gun is newer than 2000. Can anyone give me the BOD, and can you tell me what the -6 in the Model number designates?

Thank You for the Help!

December 31, 2009, 10:17 AM
Badco6354: Welcome to The Firing Line! The CEK prefix would indicate late 2000 or early 2001. The "dash" number added to the basic model number indicates a (usually minor) design or engineering change - the 65-6 came out in 1997 and included a change in the cylinder stop design, MIM hammer with floating firing pin, and changes to the internal lockwork.

The 48-4 is definately a 1981

The 39 spl appears to be a 1952/1953. Note that you have 6 numerical digits where the book indicates there should be only 5. I dont see an S prefix starting with a numerical 9 that has six numerical digits after the S. Could that last 0 not really be there?

There are 6 numerical digit S prefixes but none of them start with a 9; the highest is a 3.

Sorry folks. I think I got it. Was looking in the "S Serial Prefix: N Frames Postwar" section but it can be found in the "Postwar S Serial Range (fixed sight K frame)" section.

Yours must be a model 10, 11, or 45. Correct? If so then I am now pretty certain your date range is 1945-1948, and would be toward the 1947 or 1948 end of the spectrum.

Sorry for all the confusion. I'll get better at this I promise!
Happy New Year to you all.

Yes, I think that's correct. I would just add it would have to be a Model 10, because he said the caliber is .38 Special. The 11 was .38/200 (aka .38 S&W) and the 45 was .22. And, technically, the gun would be a .38 Military & Police (pre Model 10) because the system of designating models by number didn't start until 1957.

ETA: It could also be a pre Model 12, though the pre 10 would be much more likely. Test the frame with a magnet - the 12 is alloy.

Ordinarily I would say that S&W should know better than anyone, but I think not in this case. The "N" prefix wasn't initiated until 1969, and Jim's response appears correct, at least based on SCSW, which is a pretty authoritative source. If the SN started with an "S" followed by those digits then 1967 would be correct - I wonder if someone at S&W was confused by that.

While there is overlap on some of the serial numbers, as Flyfish stated, they confused the "N" prefix with a "S".
Per the SCSW:
S290000 - S304999 = 1967 - 1968
S305000 - S329999 = 1968 - 1969
S330000 - S333454 = 1969 - 1970
N1 - N99999 = 1969 - 1972
N100000 - N199999 = 1973
N200000 - N299999 = 1974 - 1977
To add some more confusion:
N300000 - N399999 = 1975 - 1976
N400000 - N499999 = 1977 - 1978
Depending on the specific model number of the gun an earlier serial number can be from a later manufactured gun. Example, most of the last half of the N200000 serial range was model 28's and 58's in 1976/77. Where as, a model 27 with a later N300000 serial number could be made in 1975.

Budget_patriot,

S811120 - S999999 = 1945 - 1948, so likely 1948 for your sn of S990XXX.

All I"ll say is it's not rated for +P and because of it's age why push it.

Well, not as valuable as the larger "K" or "N" frame diamond grips but still worth at least $40 in minty condition. If your going to shoot it much I would look at getting grips a little larger (more hand filling) to get a better hold of it.

Its a pre-war .22 hand ejector series pistol. Date range is 1911-1941 with a serial # range of 160000 to 536684. So your is closer to '41.

On pg 118 of the catalog, I see a pic that looks exactly like yours. They are calling this gun a .22 Kit Gun (prewar). Kit Gun meaning a small gun marketed to easily take with you on fishing or camping trips. They have an insert pic of your front sight andf they call it a U.S.R.A. pocket revolver front sight (whatever that means).

Value ranges from $200, $400, $900, $1500, $2650, $3500 (poor, fair, good, very good, exec, as new in box).

I would definately contact S&W for a factory letter. Perhaps send them good sized photos including where the serial# in on the gun.

S&W's stance is that steel K frames made after 1958 are okay to use +P but with the caveat that it can accelerate wear.

The list doesn't cover every three-letter prefix, it only gives the prefix they were using at certain points in time. It lists "ABL" as Jan 1983 and "ADE" as Oct 1983, so we can infer that ADA was used between those two dates.

Just to add, it appears the barrel is stamped .38 S&W Spl. (Special). That knocks out the pre model 45 and 11. The frame is steel so that knocks out pre model 12. The SN puts it at the end of production in 1951 so that makes it a .38 Military and Police (postwar) which went on to become the model 10 when S&W started stamping model numbers ~1958.

You know what, after seeing your comment about it not having a lock, I looked up the history on the model 317 and found out that a small number were shipped in March of 1997 with the LGT prefix (which was not listed in the serial number section).

To start, does anything on it identify it as a S&W revolver? If yes, is it a 5 shot or 6 shot? What exactly is the caliber marking on the barrel? And did you take the serial number from the underside of the frames grip butt and include any letter prefixes.

I am sorry. it Does have smith and Wesson Stamped on it. The barrel on one side has 38 s&w special stamped and the other just has smith and Wesson. It is a 5 shot, it has two different number sets. On the bottom of the butt and the backside of the wood grips it is stamped 1235XX. However on the frame and cylinder carrier it is stamped 578XX. There is a "floating" L above the 578XX set. It may have been a police or military issue but I'm not sure. I hope this info helps a little. Thank you again.

nchellbilly: Your Model 10 is from the same period as blamm123's: 1966 to 1967. His is toward the front of the serial number range used in those years, so 1966 is more likely - yours is toward the end of the range, so more likely 1967. The 10-6 was introduced in 1962 when S&W dropped the screw in front of the trigger guard, resulting in the so called "3-screw" configuration that is still used today. It remained in production until 1977 when the 10-8 replaced it (the 10-4/5 and 10-7 models had the tapered barrel, but were otherwise identical to the 10-6 and 10-8, respectively).

The grips on your gun are the smooth K-frame target grips (you can see that the grips are larger than the frame, covering the butt - the standard service grips left the butt exposed). They're somewhat less common than the service and checkered target grips - I have them on a couple of my K-frames and I like them very much.

FWIW the stocks are most likely not original to the gun. S&W almost never put target stocks on fixed-sight revolvers.

The original stocks should have the numerical portion of the serial number (omitting the "C" prefix) under the RH panel.

jabco,
Are there a couple of more digits in the serial number? Maybe S32xxxx? I can only tell you that the 28-2 was introduced in 1961. In 1968, the diamond grips were deleted. In 1969, Serial numbers were changed to the N prefix. So somewhere between 1961 and 1969. If it is S32xxxx, then 1968-1969.

Hi I am wondering if I could get some information on a SW my Dad gave me. He believes it was a Cavalry Officer's issue side arm. The serial number is: 556xxx.
S&W reused the same serial numbers on different models of guns. I need a lot more info to figure out what model it is... Exact caliber markings on the barrel, any other markings on the gun and barrel, 5 shot or 6, is it a swing out cylinder or a break top (barrel/cylinder hinge down)? If it's a break top then double or single action, hammer or hammerless, does it have a trigger guard... A picture would help allot too.

Should have a "D" in the serial number. Take SN from here:

Assuming there was no "K" prefix that serial number was used on two different models of 32. Square butt or round butt will narrow it down, see pic.

.38 Military and Police Model of 1905-4th change.
s/n range 241704-1000000 manufactured between 1915-1942
1934 s/n range was approx. 646994-648882 based on 25 revolvers for Coast Guard in that range.
Just guessing yours was mid to late 20's era.
Appears to be a target model with square butt.

onebadscrambler,

thanks for the info...what does it mean that it was a 'target model'? is that a type of usage, i.e. shooting at targets? also, what does 'based on 25 revolvers for Coast Guard in that range' mean? did the Coast Guard have a specific usage here and it may have been one of those?

i may send off to Mr. Jinks for more history. this is my first foray into this type of research and find the stories of the weapons incredibly interesting.

Target model has adjustable rear sights and square butt frame which is what yours appears to have. Use is up to the owner.
The Coast Guard purchased 25 revolvers in 1934 and their s/n's fell into that range of numbers. The CG models were 4" barrels, blued finish, and square butt. I only mentioned them as I used them to narrow down that yours was likely produced mid to late 20's.
FlyFish and Laytonj1 are far more knowledgable than I. If they have any more info, I am sure they will share it.

I have read a lot about the avoidance of 125gr. ammunition. Shooting full power "light for the caliber" bullets can result in accelerated erosion to the forcing cone and possible accelerated flame cutting to the frames top strap due to the greater powder charges and higher velocities involved.
However, you'll have to shoot an awful lot of them for it to be an issue.
Can you also tell me what dimensions S&W used for chamber throat dimensions then?
Like Ruger and Colt, it's a crap shoot. The only way to know for sure is to measure them.
I am still amazed that there is/was such a problem standardizing the throats for .452. While the standard prior to WWII was .454 the current .452 standard has been around long enough that it should be a non issue. Some make then loose, others too tight.

RHKP = Royal Hong Kong Police. Your gun was part of a sale to Hong Kong that was later traded in towards the purchase of new guns. Those used guns were then resold thru distributors here.

Could someone tell me the year my little Smith 22 was made? It's a model 43. serial # 49xxx.
The book shows serial numbers starting at 11000 in 1955 and 52673 in 1959. So, in between there.

C-prefix began in 1948.

1948-51 C1-C223998 Yours would fall into this timeframe.

The C prefix ended in 1967.

C103595 = 1948 to 1951 (C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951).
"C" prefix ran from 1948 to 1967 (C1 in 1948 to C999999 in 1967).

A friend of mine came across a small snub revolver and we have finally identified it as a S&W Terrier (Pre-model 38/32). I am looking to sell it but would like to know approximately when it was made. I know it was made before 1957 because it has no stamping for a model number and the gun was produced starting in 1936.
Serial number is 712XX.
Anyone willing to give me an approximate date?

Hello,
I also have only one S&W in the stable.. can someone please date it? I'm thinking it was early '63-'64.
It's a K22 w/6" barrel SN= K4026xx

I am LOOKING FOR a K38 w/6" barrel of about the same manufacture so that I have a pair.. eventually I may also purchase a K32

Serial number is 712XX.The .38/32 Terrier (Pre-War) started production in 1936 at serial number 38976 and ran to 1940 at serial number 54474.
The .38/32 Terrier (Postwar) (pre model 32) ran from serial number 54475 in 1948 to 122678 in 1974.
To get you closer, the trigger guard screw (upper front of trigger guard) was eliminated in 1953 and the upper side plate screw was eliminated in 1955 (from 4 sideplate screws to 3).

Jim, yes that gets me closer. It's pre-1953 then, because it does have the trigger guard screw. Wow, so it's older than I thought.
If anyone knows a little more about these I'd love to know more about them in general.

I inheritied my grandfather's S&W .38 Special when he passed away in 1994. He was a mitilitary policeman in the army during WW2 and I initially thought it might be his army revolver. But having read some of the posts here, I think it is most likely a more recent model.

However, the number on the butt starts with 2D30XXX. Inside the revolver arm there is another number with 5 digits beinging with 96XXX. Also on the revolver arm, there is what looks to be an "after market" (for lack of a better word) stamp or engraving. It looks like it reads E13. But I can only read the top half of it. Are there any posts here that mention serial numbers such as this or any type of "after market" stamp/engraving. Are these things typical or can I hang on to the hope that there is something special about my grand dad's gun?

Thanks for allowing me to apprentice under ya.
I and the other posters appreciate the help.

the number on the butt starts with 2D30XXX
That is the serial number and dates it to 1977.
The other numbers/markings are assembly numbers.

4506's were made from 1988 to 1999. The closest I can get is the "V" prefixes started in 1994.

V490XXX = 1942 to 1944. The 38 S&W versions were made for British military use. Many were converted to 38 Special after the war and resold. Cogswell and Harrison was one of several doing conversions.

the second is a top break 38 sw the serial number is 200xxx. That serial number was used on two models:
.38 Double Action 3rd Model. SN's ran from 119001 in 1884 to 322700 in 1895.
.38 Safty Hammerless 4th Model. SN's ran from 116003 in 1898 to 220000 in 1907.

Hey Jim thanks for the help. The second gun is the hammerless so I guess its from 1907. Wow thanks its cool to know that a gun in my safe is over 100 years old.

The victory gun is really cool too. So it could have been carried by a Britsh officer.

thanks again.

S&W did not start using model numbers (and stamping them on the frame) until 1957/58. Before that they only went by names (Chiefs Special, Safety Hammerless, Military and Police, etc.).
