I know the .22's are famous & cheap for plinking but what do you all suggest. This will be my first rifle, not my first firearm just first rifle ina long time. I dont hunt so I am just looking for an affordable dependable round to shoot at the range. Again I dont want to spend a fortune on ammo everytimeI go to the range but for some reason I am not happy with a .22

Any suggestions??

Thanks

Possibly something in 7.62x39. I've had a LOT of fun with my Saiga and CZ carbine. NEF even makes their single shot in that caliber.

Box of 2 runs about $5 right now and can be had in soft point if you ever do get the urge to hunt.

.223 Remington is a bit more powerful than .22LR, and it is relatively cheap. I recently bought a thousand reloaded rounds for a little over $120. .223 is a good round in my opinion as it is accurate, controllable and it will always be around.
Ruger Mini-14, Ruger 77, Kel-Tec SU-16 all around $400-$500.
Any AR, more expensive but cool!

I agree the .223 would be a good alternative to the 22LR. The .223 is a lot more powerful than a 22LR.

Another option to check out would be a 17 Rem.

.223 is still 10 times more expensive than .22, and it's getting more expensive every month. Where I live, I can't find 250 rounds for less than 80$, reloaded. But I can still get 550 rds of 22 for less than $11. I have an AR, and I'm planning on getting a .22 conversion kit for it. .223 is just too darn expensive to shoot in any massive quantities.

.223 is getting more expensive but dal22ses said he's not happy with a .22.

I love unloading with my 10/22 without a care in the world about the price of ammo!:D

If you want a *fun* .22, get a ruger 10/22!

not thatI wouldn't be happy with a .22, it just seems a small round when I see guys at the rangeshooting .223 or 30-06. I will most likely pick up a nice .22 & modify the heck out of it.

I can't beat the cost of rounds for my purposes. Any suggestions on the .22's as far as rifles?

.30 M1 Carbine. Cheap rifle. Moderately cheap ammo. 30 rd mag. Just watch the brass, it tends to bounce off your head.

Could it be time to try a Milsurp rifle? Maybe an 8mm mauser of some sort. Still plenty of that floatin around, or a Swiss 6.5x55 maybe. It is hard to beat a good .22 I take my Ruger 77/22 every trip.

A centerfire plinker that's relatively cheap to feed? A Marlin 1894C .357mag. Eats .38spl as well. Very fun and very versatile to boot - from plinking, to hunting small game to moderate-sized deer to HD, it can do it all.

Or an AK.

I have looked at the ruger 10/22 & recently been turned onto the savage .22's. Not to sure which I like more yet? I also took a look at a couple marlins but I am not sure which to go with. I do know I want bolt action not semi.

If you really want to modify it, I'd go with a 10/22. If not, and it's for plinking, I'd make another plug for a Marlin lever - this time a 39A. Classic. Or for less money, a Henry lever.

For target work or hunting, I personally can recommend a CZ 452 bolt-action. Terrific gun. A decent scope, a $14 Brooks trigger kit, and you'll have yourself a sweet little tack driver.

I like the CZ, I will look into that. Thanks

If my local dealers don't carry them I will most likely end up with a Marlin or the a savage.

Probably depends on what you consider a fortune. :D

.357mag or .44mag lever-action carbines are pretty good for this purpose.

Sounds like a 22 rifle is in our short termed future. I also consider $10 for 20 rounds kind of expensive to plink with (true plinking that is). Nothing beats a .223 for occassional intensive shooting, but at a price. I do plink with larger caliber stuff but not frequently.

If you want to modify the rifle a lot, there is no better rifle than the Ruger 10/22. I have one; not my favorite shooter, but it's okay.

I think I know the perfect gun for you.

Beretta CX4 Storm (http://www.cx4storm.com/)

It's a carbine that you can purchase in either 9mm Luger, 40S&W, or 45ACP. For plinking purposes I would suggest the 9mm. You can buy factory 9mm Luger ammunition for less than 20 cents per round.

Plink away.

Possibly something in 7.62x39. I've had a LOT of fun with my Saiga and CZ carbine. NEF even makes their single shot in that caliber.

…and I’ve had a lot of fun with my SKS 45 – it joyfully eats the hated Wolf steel case ammo, the type of ammo it was designed to use. :) I’m finding it for about 19 cents a round, not bad.

762x39 is a great fun round,and a good SKS isn't very expensive(more ammo),the mosin-nagant is great,91/30or m44(awsome flash),and the ammo is pretty cheap.the yugo 8mm's(24/47,m48) are a great deal,and affordable ammo.for a good,don't break the bank centerfire rifle,any of these are hard to beat.

You want a17 Hummer ,this is a 22 Mag case necked down to 17 cal. Very accurate and will do 100 yds. with no problem. Shells are about 10.00 per 50.

The new 580 series Mini 14 is a great sporting rifle, but is better suited for hunting and heavy duty short range work.

If you are looking for something more combat ready with high capacity magazines and pistol grip stocks, I would recommend a Saiga or Kel-Tec .223 if you are on a budget, or an AR 15 if you have the money.

...didnt see the last post. Enjoy your new rifle!

Definitely think milsurp next, and no better gun to start with than a SKS. I have the Yugo, but Saigas sound good too. 7.62x39 can be had at AIMSURPLUS for $169/1000 of Wolf. I just bought Golden Tiger for $159, but they seem to be out of that now. Next, a Mosin 91/30 in 7.62x54r. 880 cases available for around $150 or so. You can plink to your hearts content, and you'll definitely know that those aren't girlyman .22 rimfires that you're sending down range. I have a Garand on backorder at CMP and can't wait for that one to come in.

So many fine guns; so little time to shoot them all;)

Do not look at today's Dick's flyer!
