This poll asks for your opinion on Semi Auto Shotguns for self defense.

The best semi around for defense as well as other uses is the Benelli because of it's superior cycling abilities. Very fast.

with the saiga, I have seen 7 ejected hulls in the air at the same time...

also magazine fed with 5,8 & 10 round mags..

so that makes reloads fast as well...

yes the benellis are nice as well..

Benelli - again because it cycles real fast.

I don't think I have ever seen a Benelli M4 shot as fast as the Saiga in this video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KqR2vPVPxE

The Saiga can use 10 round magazines. I think the Benelli is limited because
of magazine size.

They make semi-auto USAS-12s?

You put the Atchisson assault shotgun but none of Remingtons or Winchester/FN's offerings?

Did that today but it won't happen with anything over light loads....... At least I won't be doing it.

UM, I'll take a remmington 11-87 any day of the week, reliable, cheaper than some of the choices, steel reciever, great handeling.. plenty of acessories...

What more could one want?

I would like to point out that what's the point of having a USAS 12 if you are forced to have a semi auto version?:p No I would go for a SPAS12 for HD.

Edit: If it's a SHTF scenario a pancor jackhammer with 2 dozen extra drums. Drums can be set up as claymores which would leave 18 drums aft booby traps are set :D

Being able to empty a magazine quickly is by no means a reason to select a semi auto shotgun. Reliability should be a formost concern. I own a Benelli M1 Defense and owned a Saiga for a short time, if it were between those two, I would go with the Benelli. However, for a defense shotgun I prefer a pump such as the good old 870. If selecting a semi for personal protection, be very weary of the ammunition you select as you will find some ammo will short stroke, especially ammo with low recoil or home defense in the title.

ETA my choice for the Benelli over the Saiga is personal preference, I would also conisder an 11-87 in your poll as well.

I prefer the semi auto function because I can keep on target more easily. With a pump, the extra movements moves me off target temporarily meaning a slower follow up.

Why is cycling speed being touted when most of us can't recover from the shot and fire again (with any kind of accuracy) anywhere near the speed of the slowest-cycling semi-auto? It's a non-issue, go for RELIABILITY!

Csspecs
June 12, 2007, 10:39 AM
Well if low velocity slugs or buck shot are close to target loads (I understand that they are fairly close), then you should be able to point shoot the saiga 12 while holding it under your arm and fire at a fairly high speed.

The saiga is fairly recoil friendly and is quite a bit smaller than the assault shotguns mentioned (USAS).

BigJimP
June 13, 2007, 12:23 PM
Because I have relatively long arms - I can cycle a pump gun and not remove it or drop it down from the sighting plane - so I can cycle a pump as fast as a semi-auto. I have traditionally liked the pump gun for reliability - but I think this new genertion of semi-autos like the Benelli shoot so cleanly, and operate so quickly, that they warrant some serious consideration.

If you keep a semi-auto clean and lubricated its as reliable as the pump guns these days (but you need to keep a pump gun clean as well ). The Remington 1100, 11-87, the old Browning Auto 5 were all very tempermental in my experience - and I've owned a lot of them over the years but the only semi-auto I have today is the Benelli.

Mossberg 590A1, if its good enough for the military its likely good enough for me. Also I think that unless your house is being invaded by sasquatch and his pet grizzly the first shot will likely get rid of the bad guy. Even the sound of someone shucking a shotgun would be enough to send me over the fence and on to another house

The numbers don't work because the OP made the poll so people can vote for mulitiple choices. Most of the OP's polls are like this.

Benelli would be my first choice in a new gun. I used to own one, with a pretty short barrel and receiver sights, don't know exactly why I sold it, I guess because about all it was good for was defense or maybe a turkey gun.

Frankly, I prefer the A5, I have five of them and I have had less malfunctions with them then any of the pumps I have owned. A good A5 with a slug barrel on it would be my choice. But I also have a Remington 1100 that I would trust. I have a winchester model 12 pump and a Winchester model 97 both in very good shape, but out of a case of shells I am much more likely to short shuck either one and create a malfuction, then any of my A5's plus I like the Magazzene cut off on the A5.

There is another thing I like better about autos vs pumps is you can run a pump dry and end up with an empty chamber, and still think it is loaded when the action gets hot, I have done it dove hunting on many ocasions, but an auto always locks back and lets you know it is empty. I have never pulled the trigger on an auto and got a click, in the heat of fast shooting.

I know this isn't an auto vs. pump thread. Sorry.

Give me a bone stock shotgun, Wood-n-Blue, with no curb feelers or fuzzy dice please.

Winchester Super X Model 1 is the best semi auto - period.
When your "favorite" gets over 300,000 rds through it, get back to me. ;)

Winchester SX2 is another very good shotgun that continues to prove itself.
Then again, it does come from a fine family. :)

Beretta 303.
Again, when your gun gets over 250,000 rds fired through it, get back to me.

Rem 1100 is a better shotgun than a 11-87, IME/IMO.
So give me a bone stock 1100, with a fixed skeet /IC choked barrel.

Browning Auto 5

Now, just me, with all the extra monies I will not be spending for curb feelers, fuzzy dice and digi-cam to post pics of a shotgun on BragNet...

Ammunition, lots and lots of ammunition please.
Awerbuck, Randy Cain or some other defensive training class please.

Best kept secret is a 1100 or Beretta 303 20 gauge skeet gun - me

One cannot buy skill and targets - me

hehehe...I sure do like it when folks get rid of real shotguns for less money because they "gotta have" a kewl toy - Me and my kind.

Don't forget, many folks can shuck a pump faster than a kewl semi auto can shuck itself....*snicker*

Low spark of high heeled boys - Traffic

I fear the man with a single shot shotgun, that has used that shotgun forever, than the whippersnapper with a kewl toy that has no training, no trigger time, and post pictures on Internet.

I don't need a flame suit - because I am right!

Other...Browning Auto-5.

I have one that is over 100 years old and if I had to choose between it and any other modern autoloader in a protection situation....I'm going for the old dog.

It cycles faster than you can aim, never jams, has more experience than I do, will really impress the LEO's when they come to clean up the mess and wont end up as evidence that I was predisposed to shoot people.

Jeff,

You made a very good point, the so called extream tactical shotguns are not needed for home defense, and might not even be the best choice, but I definately would not want one to be displayed by the prosecution at my trial, if it ever came to that, which I hope it never does.

My all time favorite shotgun is the Remington 11. My grandfather purchased one in 1948 and I still drool over it.

Blue Duck ,

The rule for Defensive Shotguns is load what you shoot. At least for us old fuds with tube mags on our guns. "Shouldn't" shoot the shotgun dry if you do. Bolt hold opens are great, but I have seen plenty of folks shoot their guns dry with the bolt held open and not known until they couldn't fire.

Some of those Saiga's do look cool, but being a New Yorker...................

We have funny rules like I could maybe get a Short barreled Rifle if I was realy good, but it can't have a flash "hider" or a collapsible stock. At least that's how I read the law, might be wrong. I can't have a Pistol grip on my hi-cap 11-87 either.

I quess the answer is what can you afford?

Gazpacho
June 29, 2007, 09:28 PM
FWIW I haven't cleaned or lubricated my Saiga-12 for at least 500 rounds now. It's been dropped in the dust alot. No FTFs/FTEs with light loads or reduced tactical loads. Not much of a tortue test, but my shoulder can only withstand so much.

My vote is for the new Mossberg 930 Tactical....

I paid $469.00 for mine...It holds 4 in the tube + 1 in the chamber...

I went to the range this past week and blasted 19 rounds...a nice mixture of slugs and buckshot in 2 3/4" & 3"...no problems whatsoever and the recoil seemed alot less then my old Rem 870 pump...probably due the semi action...I should have tried the remington reduced recoil loads just to see if they function as well...maybe next week...

Here's mine with the breacher end...

The Mossberg 5500 is back again? I have a 9200, although most folks gives my 9200 the high brow look, I don't give them any attention since my Mossberg 9200 is very reliable with just about any loads. josh

The 930 is DEFINITELY NOT the 5500, no o-rings, the gas system has a much smaller length of travel, and it's easy to clean!!

The 5500 wasn't a bad gun though, I just think they actually took what they learned from the 5500 and applied it to the new design...
