OK, I've been bitten by the bug and I've got to own a Sig. It's got to be full sized and .40 caliber. Which of the models that they make should I be looking for? Which should I avoid?

I don't think there are any to avoid. Handle some at the gun shop and see what you like.

226 = full size
229 = mid size

I can highly recommend the sigpro in .40 It's relatively inexpensive, 12+1 capacity, nicely balanced and light for it's size, has a very nice da/sa trigger, accurate and a blast to shoot. The only drawback I can think of is if you're a sig purist that thinks 'plastic' guns are crap.

Sig P239 in .40S&W has a7-shot capacity and is a great CCW gun.

I've owned the p226 and the P239, can't go wrong with either. Personally, I liked the bigger P226 better. Awesome gun, light recoil, super accurate.

My problem is that I've been looking for a Sig P226 X-Five and can't find one anywhere to find out if the feel is right for me. Sigh....

For a full-size Sig in .40 the 226 or Sig pro

In .40 I would go with a stainless frame.

I bought a 229 in .40 last Friday, shot 50rds through it on Saturday and, well, pretty much smiled ear to ear. It's my first Sig.

Sig makes a fine pistol. I like my 229. The only thing I don't like is that it feels like it is riding really high out of my grip so I feel like I don't have any control but, it dosn't shoot that way. It shoots great and the dimention thing is probaly in my head.

Only SIG full-size pistols available in .40 are:

P226

sig pro 2340 or 2022 (polymer frames)

I know sigs are one of the most respected gun makers out there, but it would be wise to get some range time with the model you intend to purchase (I wish I had). I in no way mean to bash sig, I can only speak to the model I had; P229 9mm. I agree with mastersmith about the grip; the stock grip made it feel like it slid around in the hand alot (this could be fixed with aftermarket rubber), however the big problem I had was the accuracy. It makes no sense since sig are well known for their accurate pistols, I dont know maybe mine was a lemon, but hard as I tried I could never get any good groups with it (no accuracy problems with the S&W, glock or rugers I've had). I in no way mean to dissuade you from buying a sig, just try it out first.

I can vouch for his good prices on sigs, I'm in Fl and found the best price all the way up there in Alaska when I last bought a sig earlier this year.

If possible try and shoot someones personal gun..not that range stuff ..unless you know they are in good shape..why? well i shot range guns the first few times i shot a sig..and litterally after i was done i thought to myself .."all the hype over this pos"
until i shot someones personal gun at the range..accurate was an understatement ive never shot a gun as good as i did the P220 45acp this guy let me shoot..i cant shoot my own gun as well as i did his and i only shot 6 rounds through it..but im sure thats with all guns..range guns give you the feel .. but until you shoot something that someone owns, and takes care of you really cant get the feeling of how well its gonna shoot and i believe thats with any gun maker/brand...just my 2 cents

I have the 226 and love it. I want to get more of them, just a sweet shooting weapon.

I'd go for a 229. It's a great gun. There are tons of police trade in's floating around out there, as well as cheap mags. It's easy to clean and maintain, and you'll really like the way it shoots.

That would be my preference.

Some people have suggested the 229, that is a mid-sized handgun. He said that he wanted a full sized handgun, so the 226 would be what he wanted.

Sig 220. Come on now, you need a 45.:p

I have a 220 and love it. All of my friends were in to fantastic plastic guns and now they have all sold them and carry Sigs. One carries a 239 in 9mm, which is the best for a carry weapon IMO. Another has a 232 in 380 and a 226 in 357 Sig. And the other has a 229 in 40.

The 226 in the full size gun and I would say the 229 is a larger mid-sized gun. I have shot the 229 in 40 and the recoil was surprisingly mild. Definatly alot better than the 40 cal Glocks and XDs I've shot.

I have both the 226 X-Five in ( with the wood grips ) in a .40 and the 226 stainless in .40 They've both very different - but good guns.

The X-five has a large grip, is single action, has an adj trigger - lots of features that are different than a standard SIG. And it will retail for about $ 2,500 now.

The 226 stainless in .40 is about $1,050 retail - has a decocker is a DA/SA gun and a nice gun. The trigger is very different from the X-Five.

But I'd recommend them both for different reasons. X-Five will be very difficult to find holsters for, about 59 oz with a full mag in it .... etc

I'm not so sure that I would avoid the plastic one. I held a 2022 today and it felt pretty good in my hand. I own two other polymer guns and was looking for a metal Sig, but........

Does anyone own a polymer Sig?

226! the alloy frame is much nicer, and feels much better in hand. Pass on the hogue grips though, unless your mitts are really big.

I have a P229 in .40 and I like it a lot. It is well balanced and should be easier to conceal than the full sized P226 (in case you decide you want to conceal it). The P226 has a higher mag capacity, but that may not be an important factor to you. Some ffel the balance of the P229 is better since the P226 may be a little barrel heavy. Overall, its hard to go wrong with a Sig unless you get a non-stainless one. I had some pit rusting with my P245. Needless to say, I don't own it anymore. The weird thing is my P228 never gave me any problems though. Weird.:confused:

What ever you do, buy it from this fella; even if he's a few dollars more. I can personally vouch for his intergrity; he won't turn his back if you ever have a problem!!!

My Sig was a Grade-1 CPO in 9mm and was the most accurate gun I've ever owned, only paid around $600 for it with four 15-round mags. Never had a problem with it sliding around in my hand, fit great and provided supper accuracy.

Does anyone own a polymer Sig?

I have the SP2022 in .40 and love it. I'd wager that the majority of polymer naysayers have never even owned one, much less shot one. Spend some time on the range putting 4 or 500 rounds through one and you won't care if it's made out of pigs feet, the gun is a great shooter with a beautiful trigger. My wife has a P239 in 9mm and I love to shoot it as well, but I like my sigpro better, we all have different tastes but to discount any gun because it's got a polymer frame is just being an elitist and isn't particularly objective.

I agree with TonyM1 - the Sig Pro series is an excellent gun. The ONLY reason I don't still have one is that I already had enough full-sized .40s. My Sig 2340 was a dead-on accurate handgun.
