With the manual action of a pump you can control the next shell and/or leave the action open allowing you to see its unloaded. Semi-autos tend to have a harder time with reloads. A pump as can be shot as fast accurately as the auto with a minimal amount of practice. IMHO

Both are fine rifles IMO. Either offer quick follow-up shots on deer when you need them. The semi will soften recoil more, a plus that can improve your shooting ability. The pump may be better in extreme cold, since its easier to manually pump in case the action begins to freeze. If you have the extra cash I would look into the new Remington 750 Woodsmaster. It has a improved gas system and redesigned stock. Much better than the original semi so I have heard. Out of either 308 or 30-06 I would go with the .308 Win. Less recoil and just as accurate if not more accurate than the '06, especially out of that package. For deer loads both the '06 and the .308 are typically available in the same loadings.

Go with 308 for the shorter stroke for a dedicated deer rifle.

I had a 742 in 30-06 that I shot so much i literally wore out the locking lugs. I have a 760 in 30-06 that is every bit as accurate. Reloads were no problem in the 742, just full length size each time.
