Am getting a Rem 7400 30-06 real soon. Trouble is, I can only get the one with the high-gloss stock, which I hate. Can I use a paint stripper on this to get down to bare wood or should I sand it off? Or get a blob of walnut and make a new stock? Will then re-finish with a semi gloss poly varnish. Thanks.

Why not just "flatten" the shine with the judicious use of a little 0000 steel wool! You don't have to press hard to remove shine. I do this on the Tung Oil finish I use on my Garands.

You're looking at some very drastic measures (completely stripping and refinishing or a completely new stock)! What can it hurt if you try the steel wool and don't like it, or screw it up? But you shouldn't screw it up if you use gently, even pressure and do it all over.
