Just brought home a '20 DPMS 1x9 A3 flat top upper for my bushmaster m4, now I'm wondering what kind of optics I should get. I get a cheap illuminated leapers scope just to hold me for the time being but I'm already wanting something better. I'll say my price range is < $400. (Unless anyone's got a used ACOG for 6 but I won't hold my breath)

Just put my Sightron SII 3x9x42 on mine with Millet 1" mounts. They are 199.00 at Midway. Great scope. It was on my 7mm wsm, then my CZ452, now it lives on the Bushy. The Super Sniper is good I hear.

If you want a good scope that is often overlooked, consider the Simmons Whitetail Classic. I believe SWFA has them right now for about $90.00.

I have one, 6.5-20x50. I mounted it first on my .300 Win Mag to torture test it. After about 60 rounds I switched it on and off with my AR15 flattop. Very clear, accurate scope for the money!

I have a M8 6X Leuopold w/ med. high, qwik disconnect (Leuopold) rings on top of an extended (8.46") length A.R.M.S. Swan Sleeve with an integral flip up rear sight. Be aware that you need to go up about an inch to get the right sight hight/cheek weld...

I have a Bushy A3 and tried the block risers from Bushmaster but, I couldn't take the scope off easily and use open sights. Now I can take off the scope and flip up the rear sight and I'm good to go.

I got the fixed 6X for shooting varmints and hopefully this winter for caribou.
The Leuopold has four inches of eye relief and its mounted as far forward as as it would go, one more notch forward would be better but, thats what I got.

are you looking for a distance scope or an aimpoint red dot style scope?

if you are looking for a <cheap> red dot, look into the S.P.O.T. you can find them on the arfcom Equipment exchange boards.

Depends highly upon use. If it's a 3-gun/CQB type rifle, then get a dot sight, or 1-4. If it's an all purpose rifle, then get a 1-4, 1.5-5, fixed 4 (acog), or 1.75-6, or 2-7. If it's for hunting, get a 2-7, 3-9, fixed 6, or 4-12. If it's for targets or varmints, get a 4-12, 5-15, fixed 10, 6-18, or 6.5-20. Pick one of those, then we can talk brands in your price range.

I'm mostly looking for a distance plinking/shtf scope. So I could go either adjustable or not. If not adjustable I'd prefer something between 4 & 6x and preferably illuminated. I figure I've got the '16 with a red dot for cqb, and should have a scoped '20 to really reach out there a few hundred metres. Is it normal to feel like a mall ninja at this point?

It's funny, that Leapers scope I bought was a cheap pos that was only intended to hold me over for just a few trips to the range, but it actually looks worth a damn. If it wasn't for the price ($50), I almost wouldn't know it was a POS. It came with what would normally be $100 worth of machined flattop mounting brackets and almost looks like the 5.5x 308 ACOG. And it's illuminated. Too bad it doesn't draw much light as it's pretty dark compared to good optics, but if it'll hold zero...(hehe, maaaaybe)

The 16'' with any good red dot is good out to about 200/300 yards; assuming you have normal vision.

So what you are looking for is a 300-1000 yard area scope (the .223 is quite ineffective on people at 1000, but will work for target work).

I'm in the same boat. I've found a few scopes I like, but I'm trying to find Quick Detach (QD) rings for them that will give me a good cheek weld.

In that case (more or less an interdiction rifle), I like one of these for you (at the moment) - the illuminated requirement narrows your choices quite a bit, in addition to reducing the quality of glass for the price you can get, with that feature, but...:

1. http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=3707

2. http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=3265 (not really "illuminated", but has the "firefly" reticle).

3. http://theopticzone.com/detail.aspx?ID=3262 (ditto)

4. http://www.riflescopes.com/products/AC10774/barska_4-16x50_tactical_rifle_scope.htm

5. All of these in the "SWAT" line of Barskas - all have illum reticle, 30mm tubes, come with rings, and are well in your price range: http://www.riflescopes.com/departments/765/rifle_scopes/barska_rifle_scopes/barska_swat_rifle_scopes.htm

6. http://www.muelleroptics.com/products/MU41650IGR.html

There may be other better choices, but with a quick search, that's what I came up with - I think at a minimum, you'll want a 3-9 for medium to longish ranges; and more if possible.

I think choice #1 would be the best value, and make you the happiest. :)
