Gents,

I posted a thread earlier about inheriting a nice collection of firearms. I have just a couple of them for now (I dont have the safe to store them yet). There a couple I am really clueless about, but I know are rare, and valueable. I want to be able to sell these knowing more about them (if anyone here is interested, email/pm me). Three of these are REALLY REALLY nice Winchester Model 70's, and one is a Mauser g.33/40 with a full mannlicher stock. To be perfectly honest, i do not know much about either (I never got into these type). I am including a couple pics in the post, and some links to some more so people who dont need to see them all dont need to.

Lets start with the Mauser. It says on it Mauser on the left side, along with g.33/40. Its a .270 calibur. The stock on it is a wonderful peice of wood. On the bottom, the bottom Ammo clip spot, its fully engraved (see pic). It looks amazing, the picture cant really do it justice honestly. Can any one tell me any more about this? Whats it worth, how to go about selling it? ect..

Notice the great buffalo :) The stock appears (I think) to be a nice custom stock made from a great peice of wood
Another MauserPic (http://home.comcast.net/~rel1203/Mauser2702.jpg)
Last Mauser Pic (http://home.comcast.net/~rel1203/Mauser2704.jpg)

Now on to the Winchester's. I took one to 2 different stores today, but they didnt really know how to sell such a nice rifle, nor what its really worth. The first is also a .270 in immaculate condition. The Wood is a tiger something (cant remember what they called it, i dont know wood). The Scope is a Redfeild 4x thats in brilliant condition, not a scratch or dent anywhere on the rifle. The action has some custom pen engraving they is very nice but doesnt appear to be factory from what the store said. They were all impressed with the quality of it though. It doesnt say anywhere on the barrell that its a Model 70, but says winchester and .270 on it. The Serial begins with 399, and appears to be a 1956-1957 year production. I painted over the others to not give everything away. They said it could be worth $1k upto $5k, but to do some research first. I am not sure where to begin. Ask any questions that might help.

Last Winchester 270 (http://home.comcast.net/~rel1203/Winchester2705.jpg)

The Next one is a Model 70, that is a 22Hornet. This one also has an amazing peice of wood, scratch free. This one says Model 70 on the Barrell on the left side. The scope i believe is a Baush and Laumb.

Lastly is an amazingly dark wooded Model 27 in .264 Win Mag. Wow this one looks amazing. On the bottom, is some custom engraving, with golden letters JK. Top notch engraving none the less. The scope is a baush and laumb also.

As I said, i just trying to get some information maybe about these, and ideas of what there worth, and how to sell them properly (where?). If your interested, let me know. If there is any more information i can provide, please feel free to ask and I will get it for you...

Thank you guys so much and sorry for the long post.

Your father had wonderfull taste in both wood and metal. I'm sure someone will help you out in a bit. Too...many pretty pictures...I gotta go :)

One of the problem selling custom guns is that they are custom, you sometimes cant get what they are worth. Yours look really nice and would best be sold by a reputable seller on internet auction OR after inspection, maybe send em down to a dealer who goes to safari club.

I have two rifles in the shop that were made 20 years ago and sold then for $45,000, cant even get 20K now

Well, i have kept many more, so dont worry about this. He had ALOT of nice guns, these are only some of them that didnt mean much to me (atleast not that he told me of). But they are certainly of high quality, which is why you can see why I am asking how to handle them properly. When I was 17 (9 years ago about). he told me if anything happened to him, keep some of his guns, sell the rest and do something that really makes me happy or something I really loved. I have certainly kept my fair share of the guns, but its time to start upholding the other part of the deal, and having just got married and just bought a house, the time is right. Keep the good ideas coming, and any links to sites that might help, or anything that might help me would be great. Is there a Winchestor collectors forum somewhere? Or a custom guns forums? I know guns are only worth what some oen is willing to pay (learned that from the man himself), so any advice is greatly appreicated.

Thanks so much guys

GET THEE to a reputable appraiser.

You should be able to date all your winchesters on line using the serial number.

another thing to consider: is there a cartridge head impression on the bolt face. if no, then it's likely that there were very few (<50) rounds fired through it. That can be good or bad. Good for value ... bad if you want to shoot it while deciding on whether to sell it or not.

Those are some sweet lookers and I know that I'd be really hard pressed to sell any of them.

After the appraiser gives you an appraisal, you might, as was mentioned, contact a high end auction house if the values are significant.

my 2 cents.

(P.S. when I first received my model 70 .30-06 (vintage 1951), Dad said he had only fired it a couple of times. The bolt face was clean/no cartridge head imprint. I couldn't let a sweet rifle such as that become a safe queen, however, and it has been shot much since then. )

Any idea how to find a reputiable appraiser?

Oh, and another thing. I am dead set on selling these. As I have said, I have kept better ones in the safe. These I hope are to go towards better my financial sitution and make for a slightly better life for my wife and I. They are truely works of arts, but the ones I have kept I feel are better. Any rough guesses what these might be worth?

**Sigh**...the things I see when I'm broke (which is usually, and why I don't have any really nice guns.

I's love 1,2 and 4 (and the only reson I wouldn't like 4 is the caliber).

I especially love Mannlicher stocked guns.

**Sigh**...

Do a Google search on "Julia's Auction". They have a great reputation for selling quality firearms. They also happen to be located in Fairfield, Maine and we have friends who know the Julias well.

You won't be disappointed in prices that your rifles will bring.

Well, Maine is a lot closer to you than Bozeman, MT, but you could also contact (and send your pics to) Westley Richards at

http://www.westleyrichards.com/contact/index.html

You should get an opinion or two.

I would send these pictures to Chadicks.Do a search and find them.I have subscribed to the Gunlist for years and they specialize more than most in high dollar guns. Those model 70's could go for several thousand dollars each. The 22 hornet is worth a lot extra because of caliber rarity.Problem is that you probably can't sell them for that ,but they can.Buyers willing to pay what those guns are worth are rare.Another option would be to go through the process of being set up to sell on Gunbroker.com.Set your reserve at what is acceptable to you.You would have to ship it to an FFL worked out between you and the buyer but that is no big deal.I just hate to see you take them to some local gunstore and the guy says something like,"Yeah,I could have bought 3 of these last week for $500" or some crap like that.Try not to get in too big of a hurry.

This is great advice. I am certainly in no big hurry as I am not in need of the money, just will be nice to have. I will check out some of the links you guys provided in more detail later tonight and see how things look.

Man I wish I had some money. I would love to have that Mauser. I am absolutely in love with it. I would watch Gunbroker and see if you can find any guns that are comparable and see what they're going for. Oh and it's some type of a goat, not a Buffalo. :D

September 28, 2006, 04:40 PM
I too love that Mauser - I believe that is a mountain goat, not a bison engraving. I should warn you that certain people who might be willing to appraise them for you, also might be willing to appraise them for less than they are worth, and then offer to take them off your hands at the lower price. So you're better off having a different person appraise them, than the one who buys them from you. If you're gonna sell by consignment, on the net, then there's no harm in having THAT outfit do the appraisal, as long as they're not the ones buying them - as long as they are put up for a fair market sale open to the public.

Cherry's has been suggested as a place to appraise and/or sell. Any thoughts on them?
http://www.cherrys.com

There located in NC, so much closer atleast to VA for me... Thoughts?

I live about 20 minutes from Cherry's, but they don't have a showroom, all net sales these days. You need an appointment to even look at something listed on their site.....
To me this means that they sell to serious buyers only,,, which leads me to believe that they are a good semi-local outlet for selling those rifles if you want to, (wish I had the cash for that mauser!) I've had several great conversations with the guys who run that outfit. They are serious professionals, very honest and well respected. You should give them a call and send them some pics, you won't de disappointed.
Good luck!

Odds are that the .22 Hornet is the jewel of the collection, assuming it's pre-1964; Serial #581471 or smaller. (Post 1963 serial numbers start at 700,000)

A price comparison, per a five-year-old Fjestad's Blue Book, and assuming a 100% gun:

Standard calibers, $900. .22 Hornet, $1,800. .22 Swift, $1,075. .257 Roberts, $1,625.

That's for standard grade. Super Grade Model 70s are about double the above numbers.

A dealer is likely to pay no more than around 60% of retail. Custom guns are harder to sell; it's a far more limited market.

Sending pictures to various major dealers is a good start. Cabela's, for one. I guess Google for "firearms appraisers"...

Perhaps Cabelas would give you a decent appraisal if it was understood you have no intention of selling to them!! Cabelas will offer 60% of market value if your lucky!!

I didnt know Cabela's was an appriaser service as well.. I will have to look them up. I am waiting to hear back from one of the 3 places I have sent the pics to. Cherry's would be great, could make it a day trip or weekend trip there... Julias seems like a great place, but to bad their big auction is this upcoming weekend, and I still have yet to hear back from them

YOU LIVE IN A HUMID STATE, PLEASE GET THOSE GUNS OUT OF THOSE TERRIBLE CASES BEFORE YOU RUIN THEM!!!!!

There, I said it :)

It'd be a shame to start growing rust on those guns at this point. Please think carefully about you store them!!!

Beautiful guns! It's a shame you want to sell them, but good luck in your endeavors. :)

http://www.rockislandauction.com/ puts a nice auction on every few months. Its $30 for the catolog if I recall, but its a beautifull full color catolog with very nice descriptions and pictures of all the guns on sale. Last one I looked at had some beautiful stuff far out of my price range, but it might just be the type of listing to list your guns.

Man if these are the ones you're willing to let go, I can't imagine how nice the others you're keeping must be. Your dad had great taste. Good luck.

Having a hard time hearing back from people. The only place i have heard back from is Juila's. I am eagerly awaiting to hear from Cherry's as they are certainly the closest. Weapons are still for sale, so keep PMing or Emailing me the offers if you guys have any. I know custom stuff like this is sometimes hard to sell. Should I start a thread in the for sale section just asking for offers?

Just an update, the general consensus is these are worth about $1500 each, give or take.... Does that seem about right to you guys?

EDIT: I posted a new thread asking for help/info about a new Pedersoli 45-70 really nice rifle.
See it here.... http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?p=2129993#post2129993

Dude - you're just down the street from the NRA headquarters. Take a half-day, drop by and ask for the best firearm appraisal service in NoVA. Get them appraised and then you'll have an idea of what you have really inherited. By the way - I've bought and sold standard field grade Winchester 70s for prices that routinely exceeded $1500. The wood on those rifles are look to be about AAA grade and if so are worth that much each.

Just an update on the Serial #/Age.

The .22Hornet is serial 22xxx, which means it was produced in 1939
The .264 is serial 481xxx, which means it was produced in 1960
The .270 is serial 399xxx, which means it was produced in 1957.

Do being these age change the value of these. The .22Hornet seems to be old, and in amazing condition (was this one of the earliest)?

Let me know please
