Me and my brother-in -law took his SKS out and shot it for the first time yesterday the gun looks in pretty good shape. It was the first time we ever shot an SKS. It would only shoot one shot, and would not discharge the shell for the next shot. We had to manually do it. But, sometimes to pull the bolt back it kind of hard.

If it is a Yugo SKS then check and make sure that the gas shutoff for the grenade launcher is turned the right way. If it is straight up then the gas valve is turned so that no gas will go through the gas tube. If it is turned to the right then the gas will flow through and operate the gas piston.
but it sounds like you probebly have a bad gas tube fitting where the shutoff switch is at.
You can replace that for about $20 bucks.
You can find a brand new one on eBay.
Hope this helped.

Did you clean it?

It might still be full of preservative grease, which even makes it dangerous to fire.

I'm surprised to see that your thread "SKS Problem" hasnt been moved to "the art of the rifle" forum. Then you post this thread in the same forum. I just wanted to let you know that these threads don't belong in the NFA forum.

If you have to pull hard on the handle its not the valve. Its getting stuck in the chamber. Mine hangs up on the hammer for some reason but I just haven't looked at what the problem is. I tried polishing it but it still doesnt recock it just reloads a new round which I eject to cock it again.

This thread indeed belongs in Art of the Rifle forum, so long as this is a conventional SKS. :o

Moved with redirect.

We need more info to help you out. Do you mean with an empty chamber? Or after a spent case fails to eject? Also, what kind of SKS? Have you gone on the cosomoline witch hunt internally yet?

To answer what I can from your first post...
as long as nothing is broken or gummed up, the bolt should slide nice and easy, also,, of course, the "gas system" only works when you fire the rifle.... and if something is keeping the bolt from opening when you try to pull it back on an empty chamber, you have to address that issue first.

I'm having the same problems with my Yugo too.
I have to pull the bolt back everytime it's fired to eject the spent cartridge and it's sometimes difficult.
I'm wondering if it's the Wolf steel casing getting hot and expanding,
causing it to jam up?

I haven't replaced the gas valve yet just because it does not look dirty or clogged and the bolt does cycle back (somewhat) when fired.
