Original post by BrianBM:
"Would the 590 make a good multipurpose shotgun in 12 ga. 3"? Get a rifled barrel for slugs, a long full choke for geese or turkey, a shorter/wider choke for pheasant and for practice on a trap/skeet range? I'm not much concerned about home defense."

I'm aware that Mossberg makes some items that they do not advertise--case in point, replacement barrels for the 590 in both lengths, not found on website, but available through Mossberg.

Are there any other Mossberg barrels for the 590? Do any of the many 500 barrels work with the 590 mag tube? Can the 590 accept a different mag tube to make the 500 barrels work?

The 590/590A1 barrels are limited to 18.5" and 20" smooth-bore barrels, only. The 18.5" 590 barrels are not interchangable even with their 20" length barrels, since the corresponding mag tube must be longer on the 20" vs. the 18.5" barrel.

Besides the length, the main option for the 590 barrel would be whether it has a blade sight, or just a bead mounted. Most barrels will be Parkerized, although I believe Mossberg had a blued 20" 590 model.

Also, nope, Model 500 barrels can't be used on a 590 as the barrel mounting method differs. The Model 500 barrels mount with an included captive screw on the barrel. The 590 barrels mount with a nut or end-cap, like a Remington 870.

L-2,
How accurate is your 590A1 at say 10 and 25 yards? I'm wondering about the cyl bore spread.

My intent is to select slugs beyond 10 yards; otherwise, my gun is very accurate. My spread with 9 pellet Winchester 00 buck is ~15", equating to ~0.5"/foot; which puts the spread within a human-size diameter.

I view any pellet not hitting my intended target as a liability, potentially hitting an innocent bystander in my line of work.
