Absolutly on both counts. I just use discount trap loads, 7.5's or 8's on doves. On waterfoul, and I am no expert, Steel BB's for geese over decoys, Hevi-Shot on longer range birds. 3" Mags. By the way, Please, please, please pick up those hulls after shooting doves. I almost lost a property because some moron left his hulls all over a field. I picked them up, wolf stuff, couldn't even reload them

Yes! Any 870 has versatility up the wazoo. Mine the archives for ammo info, there's gold in them thar stacks.

I use Hevishot 2s for geese, any brand of 8s or 7 1/2s for dove, and so on.

First though, you should get the lightest loads you can find and go shoot clays. Get used to the gun well before Opening Day....
