I just bought a used sks rifle that still has the cosmoline in it and was wondering how do I break it down to clean it? I shot it yesterday and it messed up on the first five rounds but then shot the next 65 with out a problem. Same thing happened today any Ideas? I have never cleaned a sks before. THanks for any help.

Where are you in Virginia?

If you're in Northern Virginia, stop by NRA and get a copy of their pamphlet on the SKS.

If you're elsewhere, or if you don't feel like spending a few bucks, go here:

Best on-the-web takedown instructions I've ever seen.

Thank you very much for your fast reply I am in Chesapeake Virginia which is about as southern as you get before you hit Carolina. That is exactly what I needed I purchased a brochure off of ebay but I wanted to clean it sooner.

As far as cleaning the cosmo goes, use a heat gun (or an oven if you're single) to melt it away. I stripped mine down, then used brake cleaner on the metal and mineral spirits on the stock. After that, I sweated the cosmo out by putting it in the oven on LOW heat (about 250) for five minutes, followed by a wipe down, then repeating until no more cosmo is completely sweated out(about a dozen trips). I went a step farther than most Yugo owners, as I wanted to se how purty I could get it. Here's a before and after for you.
-On a side note, I also used the infamous dishwasher trick to rid the stock's driftwood look. Use it at your own risk.:)

Just for other info Eazy Off oven cleaner works good for cleaning the stocks. Just make sure you have good ventilation.
