seating caps

I have been shooting an original Remington 1858 and an original 1860 Army. I have been using CCI #11 caps, and these seem to be too large for the nipples. I need to squeez them slightly for them to saty on. Is there a better way?

Yeah you can try # 10's which are smaller. I buy both and rotate as the nipples get dirtier.

I`ve stayed with remington #10 caps on my remmies .. they seem to be the most trouble free .. they are hard to find , but if they work for ya they are worth the trouble in finding them .. i`ve been useing the cci # 10 `s just for drying the cylinders out , they were easy to find and stay on well with the barrel pointed at the ground cheaper too .... some times i have to hit the cci`s twice to get`em to go off .. has never happened with the remmie #10`s.

I've been usin' and slightly squeezin CCI#11 caps for 26 years. They always go off and don't fall off. Had trouble with both CCI#10 and Rem#10 caps. It's safer to use a looser cap than to force on a tight cap...A quote from a Colt manuel.
Your alternative is to buy all #11 or all #10 Treso/Ampco or TWR Cones(nipples) then they'll all fit the same.

Thanks for the information, I got some No.10s, but have not tried them yet. I have been squeezing no.11s for the past 40 years, but I was doing Cowboy Action last weekend, and had all kinds of problems with no 11s. They proved to be very difficult to put on (squeezed) with wet and cold fingers. We will see how 10s work.

I have the same problem with CCI #11s. Both my rifle and my pistol will sometimes (about 1 in 15) require a second hit to fire. Ive tried different batches of caps but its all the same. I dont have a source for remy caps around where i live. Sucks to be me.:mad:

I use Remington #10s on my 1860 and New Army, both Ubertis. Also both are using stock Uberti nipples. I use a Ted Cash in-line capper and always squeeze each cap a little before putting them on nipple. I have never had a cap come off or require a second strke.

Luckily Remmington #10 caps are readily available at Gander Mtn and the two locally owned gun shops. If you are having trouble getting some, have you tried online through Dixie Gunworks etc.

The remingtom # 10 caps are aful hard to find only one store near me ever has them .. they ran out once so i ordered a case from Cabelas and paid the haz mat fee ... only because i want my pistols to run as smooth as possible and i`m loading for me and the wife ... and she doesn`t handle pistol problems very well . so it was worth the expence . it seems like the remmie # 10 caps were just made for the 1858 remmies perfect combination . when i shoot by myself i can make do with any of them .. but some sure can be a pain in the azz ..

I now use Remington #10 and I think they are better than CCI. Trouble is I can only get them in the UK, thats about 800 miles as the crow flies!!! I get people who are coming out for holidays to bring me stocks.
