I've been looking at .22's for my kid recently and I've been trying to stay away from the 10/22 because I didn't want an autoloader, was looking for a bolt action but I just can't find as nice a gun for the money as the 10/22....with the exception of maybe the Marlin 60...but I still like the Ruger better. Anyway, down the road there are TONS of mods that I can do.

The question is...I noticed you have a pic of the carbine. How has it been? Does it feel too short? Is it accurate at 100 yards? How is the scope mounted? I know nothing about scopes so don't know if it has one of those little rails on top lke most .22's that the rings have to pinch or if it's tapped.
I also noticed the carbine has no checkering on the wood. Have you found that's a problem, does it get slippery? Most of my shooting will be at the range with a rest and a spotting scope so not worried about carrying it too often...just inquiring.

Not as fancy as those, but stock out of the box.

Wally World Special. BSA 3x7 "22" scope.

Rugers come drilled and tapped for a scope, and a base mount is icluded. The mount allows you to mount either a full sized scope, or the "tip-off" mounts that most small "22" scopes like the one on this rifle use.

All nice lookin' 1022's!
Kymasabe,
I understand your reluctance on the autoloader but if you're going to take the plunge get the 1022. Your right, there or many aftermarket upgrades available for this gun. The pictured gun has many upgrades which may not be visible. Most of mine were homebrew...rollyurown:) ...it's more fun and you get it the way you want it! The receiver is tapped for the ruger rail but I replaced mine with a Power Custom which is available for under 14.00 at MidwayUSA and other outlets.
I'm 6'3 and the shorter configuration hasn't been a problem for me. However , if it becomes a problem for you or yours there are 1" buttpads extensions available at reasonable prices.
The stock pictured is an older Overton Walnut stock which I painstakingly refinished with 20 coats of ArmRseal. It has a metal buttplate as well.
I have several DSP varieties with the checkering but this one is my favorite.
As to accuracy, it's nothing to write home about but with minor tweaking it's possible to achieve inside 1" and even 1/2" groups @50yds. The .22 isn't my choice @ 100yds.
I've had brief encounters with countless varmints who would gladly endorse this gun's off-hand accuracy had they only lived!:)
Whether a youngster or an oldster it's a fantastic "fun gun" that's impossible to outgrow!

If you need any additional help just let me know!:)

Awesome pics guys. I've been tempted to buy one of them. The upgrades make me drool:D . I use a CZ452 right now. Very accurate weapon. It handles all types of ammo but it likes Eley and CCI the best.
