i was looking at the Beretta Px4 storm in the .40 cal but after talking to my cousin i'm worried about the barell length, he says he wouldnt go with anything less than a 6in. barell. i want the gun for hunting/recreation. what does everyone in the forum think about it?

what are you gonna be hunting with a .40cal handgun? 2 extra inches of barrel length isn't gonna make much difference in accuracy or velocity.

Sounds like you want a nice magnum revolver like a 686 .357 or a .44 mag.

Shooting deer with a .40SW semiauto handgun is legal in your state? What state is that?

its legal in ohio as long asthe barrel is 6 inch. or more and the caliber is .357 or bigger i know you might think no that 357 mag but that is the cartridge and the law only states caliber not cartridge and 9mm is a bigger caliber than .357 thare for you can hunt deer with a 9mm handgun as long as the barrel is 6inches or longer yes i was kind of shocked about this to

The 9mm is 1 to 2 thousands smaller than a 38 or 357. The 357 mag in a hunting round has much more power than a 9mm or .40. The PX4 would be allright for target or carry but don't go out crippling deer with it. Hunting with a handgun requires a great deal of skill.

as a sidearm

If you are going to carry it ONLY as a sidearm while hunting, to finish off a downed animal or something, it would be ok. I also agree though that I would not use it as a main gun when hunting.

I think there are almost no combat auto's with 6" barrels.

Sounds like you almost need two pistols, one for plinking and one for hunting. One that does both will not come cheap to own, or to shoot. Here's one that works pretty well for me.http://usera.imagecave.com/Tinman/DE44Mag002.jpg

There's this.... http://www.glock.com/g24.htm

I agree that for a primary hunting pistol you'll probably want something more powerful though.

(9mm bullets are generally 0.355"-0.356")

I was always under the impression that when '.357' was stated in the ODNR hunting and trapping regs, as discussed with ODNR employees (only a couple really), that it meant .357 mag and larger (in size and/or power). Though, as printed, it would legally allow .40SW.

IIRC, though, not all states allow this.

I guesse i could use the 357 for hunting deer and a .40 for other things, i guess i was trying to justify buying a handgun. by the way, i live in south dakota and also in the country so i can shoot any gun right in my backyard so i could definatly get good use out of one. also, any thoughts on the beretta Px4 Vs. the beretta Brigadier, mainly accuracy, but also the overall gun? thanks

oh im sorry i thaught 9mm was slightly bigger in width well if its that case i guess that 9mm is illeagal to hunt with in ohio but in my opinion the smallest handgun you should be hunting with is a 357 MAGNUM or bigger and thats if you know what you are doing not if your a bigginer at hunting
