Registering Shotgun

I was given a shotgun. How do I go about getting it registered in my name so it will be legal? Also, where do I go?

what state are you in?
Usually you don't have to "register" it...
Or even have it transferred to you by FFL if it was a face to face transfer with a non-dealer...
