Should it be a .22?

I really don't want to spend more than about $250-300... but want something fun to shoot and accurate... while also being somewhat portable (I don't like those "long" pistols.) I will shoot with regular sights... not intended for competition except among friends and friendly wagers...

I just realized how much money I was spending on ammo at the range... and think a .22 will cut way down on that cost...

So I need your help... I really don't know a heck of a lot about the plinkers... Need your suggestions..

Ruger's 22lr autos are hard to beat and some are within your budget.

Sig Trail Side may be worth a look, I think thats what they call it. I have a S&W 422 4" and really like it, but S&W dos'nt makem any more. :(

Walther P22 because it's very realistic when compared to a normal pistol. It doesn't have the I'm strickly for target shooting.

Beretta Neos. It CAN be long, but they have a 4" barrel model

Go with a used 357 mag, can shoot all sorts of 38 spl ammo, snake shot or 357 mag. For a .22lr I like my Buckmark Camper, 3000 rounds and only 2 problems because I did not not clean it when needed.

Before going with the P22 read this (http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?t=198818) I would say go with the Neos in 4.5", it does look like a target gun but it seems to be very dependable and easy to disassemble.

It has a longish barrel in comparison to, say, a compact pistol, but it is great to plink with. It was the hubster's first pistol and we both still really enjoy shooting it. Not a CCW, but that's not what you were asking for; and it is first-rate quality.

I almost got a trailside...But Sig has decided to discontinue this weapon, so if you do want one, get it now while there are still some NIB trailsides.

I decided on a buckmark. It's perfect.
