I just purchased a ruger m77 .270 (90%) , tang safety, red butt plate, with no scope, but does have the scope rings. I never owned a ruger rifle just pistols. Anything I should know about this gun? I paid $ 275.00 for it from my neighbor. Was that a ok price ? thanks :)

I would say you did just fine. I bought the same rifle about a year ago and paid quite a bit more. Mine was with a scope though.

I like the m77's, I think it is one of the strongest actions out there. I'm a proud owner of a M77 MkII VLE in .308

A Ruger is a great rifle from a great company. Same gun your looking at new will run about $450.00 around here.
The company that built it has had the opportunity to buy all of the top 4 rifle makers in the U.S. in the last 50 years. They came into exsistence when everybody else thought they were doomed from the start because of the larger manufacturers jump on them.
Starting with only $50,000.00 in capitol, they built that company into one of the finest gun makers in the world, without borrowing a cent.
Solid business practices and quality products was how they started, and they never looked back.
Today they make a product that is second to none, and have managed to keep that product at a reasonable cost.

If I say any more I'm going to have to charge for this commercial.

Seriously You can't go wrong with a Ruger 77.

I've got a couple of older 77s as well as a couple of the newer Mark series and, although I like both configurations, I prefer the original 77s due to the tang safeties and the more "rounded" (less "squarish") stocks. You got a super buy on a super rifle.

Realy super good buy on that rifle for sure. My father is a Master Gun Smith that use to run his own shops and created quite a few custom rifles, but his favorite was the Ruger M77 and Ruger #1s. Good choice.

My first certerfire rifle was an M77 with 2X7 redfieldin 1979. Great rifle, wish I still had it. Use to shoot Jackrabbits using 125 gr HP, and cast 170 gr, both were devastating to say the least.

Now have 2 more recent models, with older style synthetic stocks, 7X57, and .308Win. Good rifles.

Only that disappoints me is "no one needs more than 10 round magazine" comment.

You'll hear you're fair share of Ruger bashing among so called ''serious'' Riflemen out there. I have a worked over VLE 77 in .308 that people that I shoot with gets a lot of respect. That's with them on the trigger - not me. I like the Rugers. Solid actions, sturdy rifle. Sounds like you did well. Keep it clean & put many rounds down range. Enjoy

Today I shot my M77 in the very same caliber. I've owned it since new back in 1986. That is the only rifle I own that will ALWAYS shoot into at least an inch at 100yds. With any factory ammo I've tried. With handloads and neck sized only cases it will shoot 1/2" and occionally less. This is with everything stock as the factory produced it. The M77 with the tang safety like ours has also has an adjustable trigger which the markII does not. Yes, you bought a fine rifle and in my oppinion you got a good deal too.

I've got M77 tang .280 with a Bull Barrel, I love it shoots great but it's a pain to carry around, I'm in the process of putting a synth stock and Timenny Triger on it, was pain finding both for the gun...

I plan on haveing it forever though

I have the same rifle in .30-06, purchased in 1983 for $275 new. It is the only centerfire rifle I hunt with. My only dislike is that if I shoot 10-20 shots at the range, groups tend to open up as the barrel gets warm. I don't think it has an overly thick barrel in .30-06. Anyone else with a .30 or larger see the same thing? (but then I've only needed one shot each year! Haven't used up a box of shells yet!)

I had a stainless 77 in 7.62x39. Loved it except it had that goofy plastic stock with "R U G E R" molded in the flat buttstck...

I have a 77R in .270 that I bought in 1973. Out of all my asherah poles, that one will be in my posession when I croak.

I have a couple of the Ruger 77 MKII's, one in 223 and one in 308, great rifles, plenty accurate, had mine for sometime now, gave about 400 each new for them, less scopes.
