I was just curious if someone could tell me what the small holes on either side of the slide(rearward)are for?

A part of the trigger mechanism pivots on a pin that goes through that hole. The trigger of the HP is sort of a monkey-motion deal that transfers rearward trigger movement to an upward movement of a "pin", that moves a lever in the slide in a teeter-totter motion, that then moves the frame-mounted sear to release the hammer.
