I'm removing the iron sights from the barrel of a project rifle. With the sights removed, I am left with some holes. I know I can install a couple of screws in the front sight holes and grind them smooth and refinish, but what is the best way to go about that? What do I do with the rear dovetail? Is there any way to fill that in? Thanks in advance for your help.

I believe there is such a thing as a dovetail blank. Check Brownell's.

Yes, Brownells does list dovetail blanks.

For both the screws and the dovetail, I wouldn't mess with filing and refinishing. Just get headless set screws that will screw in flush with the surface and which have the right color finish (Brownells again) and Locktite them in place. Ditto for the dovetail blank. This is a service to any future owner who might take a fancy to having iron sights again.
