well this has been on my mind for sometime now, i really want a .45ACP pistol, but haven't been able to find one that I really like. i am new to .45s so i am not sure whats the best .45 out there.

GLOCK 21 - grip too FAT
GLOCK 37 - ammo is too expensive (local gun shop wants $19 for cheapest box of 50)
USP45 - grip still too big, and gun is big
1911s - dont really want one, perfer SA/DA

one that really stands out for me is the Sig P220. i have never fired this gun, but i held it and it seem to fit my hand just right. what do you guys think of the P220? is it the best SA/DA .45acp out there? as you can probably tell i have small medium hands and that is really the issue here. does the Sig P220 feed ANY ammo flawlessly? this gun will probably replace my USP40 for my homedefense gun. or do you guy suggest another .45 pistol?

Thanks!

OK, in the SIG you have a choice of two sizes (220 and 245) and two frame types (aluminum and steel) in the 220.

Then the economy entry of the Ruger 345 is well rated. There is also a older Ruger model, aluminum frame (P90).

CZ makes a 45 but it's a thick-gripped design. And there is the CZ-wannabe we call Witness.

On the used market you can find a couple of S&W models, which are strong guns with a least two different barrel lengths.

What have I missed?

If you like it buy it - there are those who love it and the quality is there. Some say the bore axis is higher than it need be but I certainly know people who prefer a Sig from the arms locker to visit Indian Country.

Almost never a mistake to buy any pistol that seems to speak to you. Don't talk yourself out of it - any other choice is a matter of taste or overall size (the Springfield single actions for the .45Gap say are smaller but single action, the S&W new Chief's Special are smaller but double action).

There are no valid knocks on the Sig for those who like it. For those who don't the notion that SA/DA is a solution in search of a problem will carry more weight.

Go with the new Ruger P345, it is a good shooter and reliable.

The Sig 220 if sometiems reffered to as the most accurate out of the box non-custom 45, I love mime, if they made a stainless 245 I'd own that too, in the ST configuration --- stainless frame as well as slide it would be a hard gun to hurt and franly is not that bad for carry --- no worse than a 1911, like I siad I'd love a more compact vershion in a non - alloy frame. If I'm goign with a full sized pistol the 220 is my first choice at the moment, based on caliber, and reliability.

If you have grip troubles with the .45acp you might want to try single stack 1911's or a .45gap. Both will address the issue.

I have had an all stainless Sig P220 for a couple of years. Great gun....very solid, very accurate, utterly reliable. It stays next to my bed loaded with some brand of 230 grain premium hollowpoint. I've never had a failure to feed, eject, etc. from any type of ammo (never shot any lead bullets, only jacketed). There are prettier guns, lighter weight guns, smaller guns, and guns with more history, but for my money this is the best all-around choice. I have the older style euro-rail (non picatinny) frame, bought new, but after the newer models came out. I've never regretted not buying the newer style (or the $150-200 saved).

The Sig 220 is the answer to your question. It simply is the best DA/SA .45 on the market. Best trigger DA and SA out of the box. Super accurate and totally reliable. Nuff said.

Dont' know why you put Glock on your list to begin with, as it's not DA/SA.

Seems like you already like the P220.My friend has one and the fit is very good for my hands. Its an accurate and smooth shooting pistol.Try to rent one for a test-drive.

A Sig Sauer P220tt is on my list.

Try USP Compact, if fat grip is the issue.

Other than the SIG P220, the 4506 and -1 models are the finest models available. Rugged, reliable, and excellent shooters.

Keep in mind they are BIG, HEAVY, and some do not like the grip.

One for sale in the handguns sale forum.

All of my LEO buddies carry S&W 4506's as their duty gun. I just held one the other day and was surprised by how thin the grip was, plus 8+1 capacity in a single stack.

Fondle a Taurus 24/7 in 45 when you get the chance... :D...Actually,I'd recommend the HK USP45 fullsize as the "best" on the market as far as factory production guns go,but I can carry my 24/7 concealed, and although the USP and the 24/7 are only slightly different in size, the 24/7 feels a lot smaller in my hand, and it holds 12+1...I intend no slight to Sigs, never owned or fired one, they have a good reputation...

Taurus Has A Good 45 And Not To Expesive

If the Sig P220 fits ya then go with it but order the shorter trigger. It's sweet in DA mode. The only concern is how does it feel in SA mode? Do you feel like your trigger finger is pinched with the trigger so close to the rear of the trigger guard? I personally don't like the trigger pull of the standard length Sig trigger but I do like the shorter trigger available from the factory.

Sig's P220 is a fine choice for a DA/SA auto in 45acp. As far as I know Beretta's Cougar is discontinued but aren't hard to find.

The P220 gets my vote. Picked one up LNIB with 3 mags and bright night sites $505 OTD recently. Really can't go wrong with a Sig. Never shot the HK in 45 but they just don't feel right in my hand.

Sig would be an excellent choice, or try to find a 3rd Generation S&W pistol such as a 4563 (alloy frame) or 4566 (steel frame). These guns compare very favorably to the Sigs IMO. And for a lower cost alternative the compact S&W 457 is a very nice gun for the money. The S&W pistols benefit greatly from a set of Hogue rubber grips.

Yeah, I did forget to list the Taurus (not 24/7 since that is not a DA/SA design, right?) There actually might be 2 Taurii in .45 with metal frames. I'm not up on the exact model numbers.

And yeah, I missed the Cougar. My view is that it has a thick grip but YMMV.

What else have we missed?

HK USP 45C. If its grip is too big, trade in your hands for a new set.

You had two Glocks on the list, so you seem to really mean you don't want a single action, though you like the 1911 grip size. Take a look at one of the single stack Paras with the LDA (Light Double Action) trigger. Better trigger than a Glock, by far, and in a 1911 package.

Or, if you are still looking for a big gun, there is the CZ 97. ;)
