I've been reading of parts kits and building your own ak47, and I've got some general questions:

Is it something that is hard to do?

What tools are needed?

What is the best parts kit I can get?

What is the best reciever I can get?

Johnny boy,

If you are going to do it do it NOW. AKPARTS.COM, centerfire systems, marsh hawks (in washington) are a few that still have parts kits. The romainian model 63/AIM kits are the cheapest and have chrome lined barrels. Buy your kits now, you won't see 'em cheap again until the market settles down from the Barrel/receiver ban reenforcement. Once you have the kits its all fun from there. I have built one so far and am in the process of three others. Receiver: Ohio Ordinance, and ewbanks seem to be the most popular. JOEKEN(.com) I know has them in stock. As far as tools, it depends on how you assemble. You can do a screw build and only need a drill press and taps. Rivet builds you need a rivet squeezer (no not cheapo depot pop rivets, real ones) and a drill press. I have a good Idea on how to do it and have many web pages saved if you need assistance on this....

If you are mechanically inclined and want to learn about the mechanics of an AK, go for it, build your own. However, they are cheap enough to buy, shoot, take apart, and learn, without going through the hassle of buying parts, putting it together, and hopeing it works? Why re-invent the wheel? Buy and shoot. ;)

It can be fairly complicated, the best way to do it is to get involved with some other builders to share resources, there are specialized tools needed and can be expensive if you are just building one.

This website will give you some insight into the building process:

I am in the process of building one, and quite frankly looking at it at this point, it would have been cheaper to just buy one already built.

There is one advantage, when it is finished, it doesn't exist in any firearms record books.
