For what use?
Target shooting at 100 yards? Tree stand hunting in close woods? Set it at 100.
Hunting in open ground? Two inches high at 100 is on about 225, ought to do ok; or you can look at the point blank settings that might get you a little more range without allowance or adjustment.

For hunting, I center it at 100 yards and then test where I need to aim for longer distances.

the VAST majority off missed shots are high. also most people in the field OVERrestimate range. this "2"high at 100" trend leads to alot of misses shots. zero dead on at the most practical distance you intend to hunt. if you hunt powerlines then dead on w/ a 308 is gonna be off fur at 250+ yards.
also consider your individule ability to hit from a field position. a "good" shot must be able to place 5 rds at 5 sec. intervals into a tea cup at 100 yards from field positions (standing, standing supported kneeling or prone).
this is a helpful test to use on yourself but dont call for witnesses, you may be embarrased.

Depends on what ranges you will be hunting at. I hunt canyons, so my .270 is currently zeroed at 200 yards. Thinking about setting it for 300 or 350 for the fall. Unless I quit dawdling and buy a 7 mm Rem. Magnum.

I center at 200 yards.

I like a 200 yard zero for general hunting with my .308 - that will put the bullets a shade under 2" high at 100 yards (about 1.8 - 1.9" depending on load), dropping to about 3" low at 250 yards. I'd estimate that about 95% of my shots would be within that 250 yard range, so with that zero I just concentrate on putting the crosshairs on target and don't sweat the exact trajectory.

That's for deer, of course, not target shooting.

I have three rifles for hunting...two of them .308's...one is zeroed at 100 for woods hunting, the other is zeroed at 200 for fields...depends on where I am hunting. The third is currently set at 200 also, but I can easily zero it for 300 and practice at that range as well. Anything game over 300 goes free since I cannot currently practice shooting further than that...

People actually 'ZERO' their guns in?
I've heard some people clean their guns, too...
