I'm currently looking for a rimfire rifle that i can accurately shoot. My first choice was a .22lr, but after reading so many good things about the .17HMR I'm starting to wonder. Which of the too would be more accurate and what is the price difference between the two? The rifle I'm looking to buy would be a CZ452 either the American for .17 or Sillouhette for 22. Thanks.

The .22lr will work best for shorter distances, the .17 for little longer distances. Either one is going to be thrown by the wind.

What distances are you talking about?

I'm looking mostly for 100 yards outdoors, and 50 indoors.

the 17HMR or the 22mag will be more than enough in the rimfire world. The Ruger 10/22mag, all you need then is a 17HMR barrel to go with it! The 7.62X39mm if you wan't a cheap centerfire round.

Both will do fine, but a .17 is a flatter shooting round, but costs a lot more than .22lr.

It is absurd to pay the price of .17 WhatEver for paper punching.

If you shoot organized competition - like CMP Rimfire Sporter, which is affordable and challenging, but not frustrating to the novice - most is strictly .22LR anyhow.

What type of grouping should I expect from a .22lr at 100 yards. I'm looking for about a 1" grouping.

For a 1in group at 100yds you'll wan't a boltgun with a 20in barrel or longer. Marlin makes nice 22lr boltguns with a suggested retail around $250.00

Look hard.
MOA for a smallbore is the home of target rifles and match ammo. Maybe with some highly tweaked sporters and luck in picking ammo. The 17HMR is claimed to do it pretty regularly but ammo cost is up there with the .22 match and the applications are small because most matches specify .22.

Check in at Rimfire Central, that is where the specialists live.

The CMP site has a forum and smallbores come up there every once in a while, too.

Thankyou very much for the quick reply's. I've decided to purchase the CZ452 Sillouhette Model in .22LR. I just dont know what type of magnification I need for 100 yard targets. Any suggestions?

If you really demand 1" groups at 100 yards from a rimfire, plan on spending $1,000 or more for a Walther or Anschutz target rifle, and $10-$15 per box of 50 for the Eley or RWS match ammunition to shoot in it.

If you're not going to be shooting in formal competition that demands such accuracy, buy a little Marlin bolt action, or a Ruger 10-22 semi for under $250, and get "Wal-Mart" .22 LR ammo for $8.00 per brick of 500.

Believe me, for informal shooting, the cheap stuff is just as much fun, and more accurate than most folks are capable of holding.
