Hey guys,
New to the board and guns. I got a new Ruger 10/22 and for some reason it was jamming yesterday. I was using the factory magazine, and it was still jamming every once in a while. Any ideas?

thanks

Is it really, really new? As in first time out of the box? Then it might just need to be 'broken in' with a few hundred rounds of ammo. Also they come shipped with the manufacturing dirt still in them and the insides are coated with a rust preventative grease, which is NOT a good lubricant. Requires a good cleaning and lube BEFORE use.

Also...there might be burrs or mold marks on the inside of the reciever inhibiting the slide of the bolt during the firing/loading cycle. Tearing it down using the instructions, once you have the bolt and return spring assembly out of the reciever, go over the inside of the aluminum reciever with a piece of Scotchbrite pad to smooth out any such rough spots. Then wipe it out and note the surfaces where the bolt slides while you're re-assembling it. Now is the time to lube those areas. Try not to get a lot of oil near the bolt face, as the oil will attract dirt from spent powder during cycling and gum up your works.

Also....maybe this should have been first.... AMMO.
.22's are notorious for loving certain ammo and hating others. The only way to know what yours likes is to try as many brands and types as you can get ahold of, comparing for function and accuracy on paper with a good rest.

.22's of any type can be .....well persnickety about their ammo.

Case in point..Rem Nylon 66 I had as a teenager was good with anything you fed it, EXCEPT the Remington 36-Gr 'Golden Bullet' hollow point. Blaze away with anything else all day, including the 40-Gr Golden bullet soild.

Load up the HP, and it choked.
Remington didn't have an answer for that.

That is part of the fun, too...In searching for the perfect ammo for YOUR 10/22, you get to try all brands, and shoot a lot. :D :D :D :D

What type of jams are you getting? What kind of ammo, solids or HP's and brand? If it is failure to feed it could be that it doesn't like that ammo or it is a "breaking in problem". If it is a failure to extract it could be a burr in the chamber or the rim is too small or the extractor is junk. Need more info. to really dial it in.

Not to send you to another forum, but the folks at www.rimfirecentral.com specialise in 10/22s among all all other rimfires. They have instructions on everything from cleaning your rifle (first time thorough cleaning is a must, and don't use a copper brush on the barrel), breaking in, upgrading the extractor (a must in my opinion), what ammo to use during break-in (high velocity for first 1000 rds) and after breakin (winchester Dynaponts), plus adding a aftermarket soft recoil buffer is a must. I went through all of this about a year ago, and now my 10/22 never jams. I was getting stovepipes and jams, but after the break-in period (yes, I did use High Velocity bulk ammo 1000 rds), my 10/22 functions flawlessly.

I'm sure there are planty of people here to help you, but why re-invent the wheel? All the info is already on www.rimfirecentral.com and they have plenty os Stickys in each category to help you.

Good luck, and trust me when I say after the break-in your 10/22 will be very pleasant to shoot.

The other part you will want to check out is the magazine-trust me, the rotary mag in the 10/22 is the absolute heart and soul. Rimfire Central has detailed instruction on how to clean and maintain the magazine. It makes sense to-after all, the feed ramp and the whole feeding/storage mechanism is contained in that little block. Most standard Ruger mags are set up as they should be, but occasionally, one will slip through QC without being properly tensioned.

Like mine. As per my usual luck, I had a heckuva time with the factory 10 round magazine that came with mine. I've actually had better luck with the Hot Lips magazines.

With proper maintenance and spring tension, I have never had problems with my magazines. They have a sticky about magazine maintenance at www.rimfirecentral.com/forums

Check under the 10/22 action section, 10/22 action reference section (Sticky), magazine service

Hope this helps.

Clean gun, change ammo, try higher velocity, and tune mag rotor (find this on rimfire central )
