slugs in a single shot?

OK I have searched but at this point was unable to find the info I need. info out the wazzoo for all you interchangeable choke guys, but none for me... anyway
I have a cheap stevens single shot 20ga. model 9474 I think it is. and I would like to know if it can shoot slugs.

Depends usually the barrel is marked with what choke the barrel is. If it is an older shotgun a lot of the times the barrels were made with a choke built into the milling (or whatever you want to call it). Usually it's safe to shoot slugs with an IC - Improved Cylinder and a Modified Cylinder. I shoot RIFLED slugs from my Remington 870 Wingmaster with a Modified barrel.

Foster type slugs are made to be safely shot from shotguns of any choke in good repair. As to how accurately, start at 40 yards, and keep moving back until you don't feel optimistic about generating a killing shot reliably. That is how far your Stevens should be shot at game. I think the bead sight will be more of a limiting factor than the full choke as far as accurate shooting.

I shot my first deer with an old H&R 20ga single shot that was my grandpa's. It had a modified choke in it, but a full choke won't be hurt by slugs. The business with choke tubes is that with a full choke tube a slug may rip it out of the barrel with the torque and spin of the slug, not the case with fixed chokes.

thanks for the replys. I will try a slug or two some time, when buying slug shells I assume that the box will indicate what type of slug (foster, rifled, ect) they are loaded with.... all new to me... I have been a metalic reloader and shooter for years but just resently traded some work for this 20 ga. Everybody has to have a shotgun! right!

50 years ago, I took my first deer. It was with a Savage Stevens single barrel 20 GA. That shotgun barrel was marked 'mod', and worked great with slugs. It still does :)

An old Hardware Store brand single was my first deer gun. I put a screw type heater hose clamp on it about where a rear sight would go. Filed a notch into the sleeve the screw goes into and had a rear sight to go with the bead on the front. Had to try a few shots moving it in and out on the taper to adjust for elevation but it worked great.

Slugs are not rifled to spin the slug !!! The "rifling" is there so that the slugs can be fired with any type of choke without damage !
