I went by the shop today to pick up some .40 cal. ammo to take to the range tommorow. All I've ever fired is 180gr. FMJ ammo through my P229, but all the guy had in stock (it was a small shop that I don't usually go to) was 165gr. FMJ. I went ahead and picked up a box, but what's the difference (other than the 15gr. of course) between these two rounds?

A little more velocity. For punching paper it won't matter. POI should be pretty close at 25 as well.

From what I've heard , LEs have dropped the 180 in favor of the 165. But as one LE said - there is no bad 40 round.I use 155 Hydra-shok.For target there will be no significant difference.

It is my understanding that .40 tends ("tends" is an important word, YMMV) to be a bit more accurate with the middle weight bullets of 155 gr and 165 gr. As others have said, you'll get more velocity but overall it probably won't change much.
