I'm buying my first pistol and have decided on a HK USP .40 (variant 2). Because I need the 'lefty' version, I have to order from HK. I understand HK's have high capacity mags available, but are still shipping guns with non-high capacity mags so it is the luck of the draw....is it worth it to wait and make sure I get the high capacity mags or take my chances and if I get the non-high capacity mags, purchase aftermarket high capacity mags? Are after market mags as good as those made by HK and are guns more 'valuable' if they come from the OEM with the high capacity mags?

A few thoughts.
If you are willing to take the luck of the draw and pay for the mags if need be, then go for it. You should be able to find original HK LEO mags for $40 or less. Not cheap, but cheaper than 6 months ago.
I am not aware of any third party making HK mags at this point, and probably wouldn't trust them if one did. I would stick to HK OEM mags.
As far as reasale, a pistol with two full-caps is going to sell for more than one with two neuter-caps... but I personally don't buy guns worried about resale value. I buy them to enjoy. I have the two 10-rounders that came with my USP, and they are now nothing more than range-mags that only infrequently get used even for that....

If you can afford it, just buy the USP now. You can get the high-caps later and then you'll have four mags, not two. ;)

I picked up some aftermarket 12-rounders for my Tactical. WAY NOT WORTH IT. They are crap compared to the OEM mags. After screwing around with $25 aftermarket mags, I am more than happy paying the $65+ that's being asked for the LE 12-rounders. (But not the $125 for the supposed pre-ban versions... not for only two more rounds at least; I'm shooting a .45.)

Mabey HK will give a discount if you order a pistol with two 10 rounders.
I just bought an HK USPf .40s&w new with two 10 rounders for $579 NIB. A new one with 13 rounders would be almost a hundred dollars more. Not worth it IMO. Eventually the full cap mags will be on my dealers shelf. In the mean time I bough two more 10 rounders for $18 each.
BTW, good choice. I really like mine and they really are a step up from Glock. My DA trigger is suprisingly smooth and the SA has just a bit of creep, but it is perfectly smooth which leads to good groups. The first day out it shot very well. I can tell it will take less time than a Glock to master.

I ordered my mags from www.fourfourmag.com and www.cdnninvestments.com when they first started selling used ones for $20 for the full capacity ones. Sadly, those prices are probably not going to be around again for a little while. I've never bothered to try aftermarket ones, not many choices for the 40 version.

Where did you get an HK USP for $540? In Houston, I am hearing $780 out the door and even on line they are going for $680....
