I'll play:

My three cartridges would be:
.223
.308
.375 H&H magnum

3 rifle would be:
AR15 w/ flattop & detachable carry handle
Steyr Scout in .308
.375 in Bolt action w/ controll feed claw extractor any 98k clone.

Why:

.223 feeds the "Poodle shooter" and can be used on varmints and hostile 2 leggers.

.308 in scout concept good all purpose rifle.

.375 will kill anything in the world and the Nasty North American Stuff that the .308 can't handle

.223, Savage med. weight barrel bolt action, good enough to get the job done.

.25-06 Custom built bolt on a '98 action, around 7 pounds with scope. Can do most hunting, up to the big stuff.

.375H&H Mod. 70 light bullets good for elk and bear, heavy bullets go the distance on the big animals.

3 Rifles & Cartridges...ramble on a bit with it.

.22lr....
.308Win...
.45-70Gov...

Have you ever noticed how Andy Rooney will start talking on and on about a subject that has absolutely nothing to do with what's been discussed on 60 Minutes that week and that absolutely no one cares about? And I really like Jell-O, too.....

Magnum 88c and seekertwo got it right

22 LR
308
45-70

I'd probably do a boltgun for the 22...maybe that new Remington 504. FAL would do it for the 308. Tossup between a lever action and a Sharps for the 45-70

Although I'm not sure exactly what the question used to be, I'll play....

1. 22lr
2. 260 rem or .257 Robts
3. .338-'06

If I could have 4, then
1. .22lr
2. .223 rem
3. .308 win
4. .375 H&H mag

If I could have 5, then
1. .22lr
2. .223 rem
3. 7mm-08
4. .338 WinMag or .35 Whelen
5. .45-70 Gov't

This is fun - filling in gaps closer and closer....I could keep on going...

I deleted my original text.
I was out in the garage looking at 3 that I've been working on, 2 unfired.
It struck me that they were very different, but great rifles in their own right.

1. ArmaLite AR10 Special Edition in .308 - unfired.
2. Remington 700 BDL in .375 Ultra Mag - unfired.
3. Marlin 1895 in .45-70 - fired less than 50 rounds.

An autoloader.
A bolt-action.
A lever-action.

3 rifles. 3 cartridges. 3 different platforms. :D
I need to get out and shoot 'em!

A bolt-action .22 with a decent trigger and set up to be close in size to one's pet hunting rifle is one great way to maintain eye-finger coordination. Lots of fun; low cost. Plus, good for just-plinking and "little-pests".

I like a .243 as a varmint and smallish-deer combination. No recoil, and really accurate. Lots of devastating handloads available...

For serious work, I still like the old '06. It's a handloader's dream. You can shoot most anything from a round lead ball on up to 220-grain bullets.

Lots of other good cartridges out there, of course, but I keep coming back to these as my pets.

Marlin 1894 357 mag (I'm cleaning it right now btw) - since I've got a revolver to go with it.

Ruger Mini 14 .223 3-9x40 scope for critters and SHTF

FAL scoped with ACOG and unlimited supply 155gr Palma. :) Longer range better smack down.

Do I need anything else? A Ruger Single Six for anything else.
