I'm looking for a rifle to plink with some pop. I'm not an AR-15 fan, nor do I care to see our boys being shot at with AK-47's. A dealer buddy has a really nice HK-G3, 308 cal. New American receiver (Century). Arsenal refurbished, new condition. Two 20rnd mags included. He'll sell to me for $525.00. Is this a good rifle and price? Any other suggestions?

i like both the HK 91/93 and FN FAL & clones.
(we may freqent the same gun stores...)
I have pondered the same question about the US made
HK clones BUT i have been warned off by 'those in the know'
as far as the KH clones go. I am very interested in an original HK
but the $1500-3000 price really sets me back.

The JLD PTR-91 clones are reported as quite good. In the $700 range, iirc.

The Century guns can be hit or miss, like any other Century-(re)built gun. If you have an opportunity to closely inspect and shoot it, it would probably be fine as a shooter.

They say the welded-up receivers are aligned with laser beams, but evidence would suggest that some of those lasers are shooting bent beams.

The rifle is an actual German made H&K with a century receiver, not a clone.

If it has a Century reciever, it is built from G3 parts kits. This makes it a clone.

I guess I don't understand the lingo then. To me, a clone is a rifle made from another manufacturer, not a gun that is 95% HK with a different receiver. But that's just the way I look at it I guess. $525.00 or $3,500, it's a no brainer to me. I'm not a collector, I just want a HK91 in my gun safe.

1) The parts from the parts kit could be off a gun (or guns) that's already been shot to death.

2) The quality of the Century receivers themselves seems to vary wildly. A bad receiver = a bad gun. Inspect carefully.

All in all, the PTR-91's seem to be a much safer bet...

Forgive my ignorance, but is a PTR-91 the same as the original HK91 but a clone?

It, like the Century you are looking at, is built on a US-made receiver with a hodge-podge of G3 parts kit parts, and US-made compliance parts. (The guns have to have x number of US-made parts to be sold here.)

Quality of the receiver itself, as well as the assembly details seems to be uniformly higher on the PTR's.

I see. Where is the best place to buy one of these and what can I expect to pay?

It appears to be an actual HK, rebarreled with an american receiver.

I agree Doc. I just looked it up on SARCO's website and dealer cost is $689.00. That may be the route I go if I decide not to get a kit.
