I'm going to be turning 18 in May and am planning on taking gun safety courses in January. I want to buy a nice semi-auto rifle for recreational uses, and possibly hunting. I'm willing to spend up to ~$1500. I was thinking about an M1A. Any suggestions?

M1A was my first rifle. Excellent choice. I've had no problems whatsoever. Trouble free shooting. Accurate as heck. Recoil is minimal. Surplus ammo is cheap. The only problem is once you purchase the M1A, you'll want to keep it company with an M1A Scout.

Nothing wrong with a M1A. Great choice. You might want to check out the AR (10, 15) and FAL series.

I'd have to agree. Go with either an M1A, an AR10, or a pre-ban AR-15.

I haven't looked at the prices, but if you can, get a pre-ban M1A just to stick it to the man.

My father has always complained that the M14 (now M1A) that he used in the army was sooo damn heavy. Just a warning.
