I am looking at picking up a .243
The problem I am running into is all I have seen have been bolt action. Has anyone ever heard of a semi auto 243? It would be for varmitting which means multiple shots would be nice. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

The first one that comes to mind is the old model 742, now model 7400 Remington.

The first thing I thought of was the Browning BAR.

I'm not sure I understand the reasoning for rapid-reload when varminting. At night, a jackrabbit is halfway cooperative if you miss; but coyotes and such are gone, gone, gone.

In daylight, I've never seen where you have a good second chance at a coyote; and if you hit the first of two or more coyotes that respond to a call, you're gonna have a running shot at 100 yards or more.

What sorta varmints are you planning on hunting?

Well acually I will be going after rockchuks and coyotes. I want something that will take out a coyote even if it isn't the greatest of all shot placement

about how much would some of the guns mentioned cost aproxamately? especially interested in the armalite...heard good things about them.

Any other ideas?

I've gotten lazy with my .243. I load the 85-grain Sierra HPBT for all-around use. I called in a coyote, one night, for a buddy who was using my rifle.

About the time I said, "Don't shoot him in the guts!", he did. Pretty much blew that poor dog in half. On a rockchuck, I guess you'd rename the little critter, "Red Cloud".

A .223 will wreck a coyote quite nicely. Even a bad hit will anchor him, and even a bolt-action will let you quickly get in the second shot.

FWIW, I bought a nearly-new Ruger 77 Mk II with scope and sling for $400. Replaced the tort-liability trigger with a Timney, did a little re-bedding, and am getting groups under 1/2", with garden-variety ammo.

I'm just too cheap to pay the kind of money folks want for these black plastic fantastics which really oughta sell for around $200.

Art- is the Rugger 77 chambered to 243? and if you don't mind my asking about how much would one cost new? and is it semi- or bolt?

could one find a Rem 700 or 70 chambered to 243?

thanks 189..

189. Yes. The Ruger 77 is chambered for the .243. Also Winchester Mod 70, Savage in several configurations, Remington as well.
My Ruger was a real coyote gun. With reloads, the 85 gr. Sierra hollow point boat tail was destructive as hell. Never shot rock chucks, but pocket gophers were just a red mist. Made a big mistake though. Sold the thing. Now I have to buy another one.

Any ideas on cost of a Win mod 70 in 243, how about savage? between a Win mod 70, savage, and ruger which would be better?

on a byline someone in another post said something about AR-10 being 308 cal. is this correct? how much would something like that cost?( wouldn't be for varmits :), mostly looking to get a large caliber, along with the varmit gun

thanks

Hey, Numbers! Sure, we can help, but you gotta learn how to do some of your own homework.

Up at the top of this page, click on "Links" and see what happens.

Winchester, Remington and others have web sites, and their retail prices are shown.

There are a lot of other gun-sites, also. Some are oriented toward a specific brand. If you don't run across a post here with a URL, you can search Yahoo, etc...
